Dead 22re
« on: Oct 29, 2007, 04:10:31 PM »
My buddy blew his felpro head gasket at about 30k miles after complete rebuild.  I replaced the head gasket for him.  He drove it for a week, about 1k miles, when the check engine light came on and it stalled out.  He was able to resart it and when he gave it gas it died again.  He was able to restart it 2 more times before it just quit.  The starter turns the engine and it has spark.  I am not seeing any gas on the plugs after turning it over for a few minutes.  Any ideas?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Is the ground wire from the battery terminal to the fender still hooked up? I think mine was coroded a few years ago and it would crank but not start , it could have been the positive going to the fuse/relay pannel on the fender I cant remember. There is also a fuel pump test port in the diagnostic box on the right fender I think it is FP+ if you jump it to the + terminal it should run the fuel pump when the key is in the run position. If the pump does not run it may be the relay? I hope you get it going.

Ruari,
Check the grounds, theres one on the intake and it gets overlooked. Hows the fuel pump, gas filter?

I loosened the bolt on the high pressure line at the EFI manifold and it sprays fuel everywhere.  My guess is the ground wire is the problem based on comments so far.

The grounds are all good.  The valves need adjustment.  The intake tube has a small hole in it between the manifold and the air cleaner.  The alternator is shot.  Unfortunately none of this is the problem with it not starting.

Any one have any other thoughts or ideas?

Your positive you have spark? I had the same problem, checked for spark and it was weak, put a different coil on and it fired right up

If you still havnt figured it out check all the obvious stuff too like fuse, making sure the coil wire is connected, etc. if you havnt done so already

I have checked spark and it does seem weak but this morning the truck started and idled for about 10 seconds and won't start now again.  Keep the ideas coming.  I really appreciate all the suggestions.  I may try replacing the coil.  Could the shot alternator with built in voltage regulator be the problem?

It might but I would think it would be noticable like when you are trying to start the engine it wouldnt crank strong because the battery would be weak

If you can somehow check the voltage maybe the computer isnt getting enough voltage to stay running but I doubt it

Tape the hole in the intake tube.

The alternator charges for about 10 minutes and then is dead for about 10 minutes.  Taped the hole in the intake.  No vaccuum leaks that I could find.

It is fixed!  :clap2: Somewhere in the ECU harness the ECU ground is good sometimes and not others.  I grounded the ECU ground wire to the frame and now the truck runs TITS!   :beerchug:
