possible hub injury?
« on: Oct 09, 2007, 08:39:58 PM »
Ever since i got my 82 theres a clunking noise coming from the front right wheel area when its in 4wd. At first i was thinking it could be the knuckles and the axle could just be needed rebuilding which im sure is a good idea anyways, but then i started think it could be the hub? Can anyone help me out? Im going home this weekend to hopefully get my carb problems fixed and get it back on the road to become my DD again so help would be appreciated.

Also if you wanted to give me some carb help id appreciate that too! thanks.

Could also be a cracked Birfield. The only way you are going to figure it out is to tear it down.

I see. Would the 4wd still work with a broken birf? I havent gotten it torn down since ive bought it yet but it will be getting some renovations in the near future hopefully. If it is the hub, would my best bet be to go to the IFS hubs and rotors? Ive got a link somewhere around here about converting to that for some reason...whats the advantages?

I'll make a long story short here... my Taco did the same thing... turned out it was the spider gears in the diff.  I let a "friend" watch it for me while I was deployed and he wheeled the :pokinit: out of the thing and cooked the front diff.  I thought it was my hubs too, but I locked the hubs, put the t-case in neutral and lifted a front wheel.  Since I'm open in the front, I should be able to spin the lifted front tire and spin the driveshaft, right?  Well, it turned for a half a turn, then bound up and released hard and turned another half turn, ect...

So anyway, you might want to try that before you take anything apart or throw parts at it.

I agree with OOPS, it sounds like a broken/cracked CV, of which the birfield is a variety. But to get to the birfield to check it out, you have to take the hub off. So you could take the hub off, and look at it. If it is ok, take it down to the birfield. Hope you figure it out. Keep us posted!
