I ran 31's on my 79 (4.10 diff with a 4-speed 22r) for about a year before going up to a 33.  With the 4.10's I could still spin the tires in the dirt and keep highway speeds (highway being a relative term...I usually drive it around 60-65).  I always had enough power to do anthing I needed (I also had 4.7's in the t-case).  If it were me I wouldn't even worry about spending that much cash on gears for just 1" of tire...if your truck feels like it has enough power to turn the 30's it should still be able to turn a 31" without changing gears.  Just my  :twocents:

4.10's should be fine, but if you want to go lower 4.30's would be better suited for 31's. You may want to consider what you may want to do to it latter and decide what to go with. 4.88's are a little low for your application but if you ever decide to go to a 33 inch tire 4.88's are a perfect match for those and 5.29's and 35's would be nice.

two cents are good.. right now with 30 inch tires the engine seems to run best above 70 mph in 5th gear. and just above 60 in 4th with hardly any throttle. i plan on rebuilding the diffs myself so that may save some money.  if i don't destroy them.

4.10s for 31s will be fine, especially if youve already got the 4.10s

For 31s stay 4.10s. Later on if you want to go up in tire size, then you can re gear. No sense in spending around $600 in just gears and rebuild kits twice.

i run 4.30's and 33's. it has enough power for fairly easy wheeling and i can do 75-80 on the highway, stick with the 4.10's don't waste your money.

hmm... now it sounds like, don't waste my time/money on 31's and do the 4.88 change.. then throw a set of 33's on instead.

That would be a better idea.
