21 vs 23 spline
« on: Sep 13, 2007, 05:42:13 PM »
Ok, Gentleman.............  I am sure this question has come up atleast a million times, but I just have to ask.  I did a search for 21 vs. 23 spline and I got 3 returned answers.  The answers that were recieved were kinda vague.........

I am currently in an 84 P/U dual cases 21 spline through out.  I am running a 4.7 gear set in the rear case.  I am running built 22r, but it's nothing really special.  I am running 38x12.50 TSL's.  I am usually hard on the drive train and am wondering when It's going to go "POP", but I have been blessed as it hasn't happened yet.

Here on the east coast alot of our rocks are wet or muddy and require alot of use of the "skinny pedal".  I am never shy with it. So, how has everyone that is running this or near this setup holding up?

Basically I am looking to see if there has been test done on a machine to document the amount of TQ the two parts will take before they break.
Remember:  No question is a stupid question.

Thanks in advance,

Jamie

21 spline is for a 4cyl and a 23 spline is for a v6 or someone who wnats the ultimate in strength.....

Thank you, sir and I understand that.  I was actually wondering how much stronger it would be as 23 spline all of the way through (change tranny out)

Or if I would have put 23 spline into the rear case...............

Would it be much stronger?

What are the # of ft. lbs. of TQ each will take?

23 spline also came in the Turbo 4 cylinder that had the R151 tranny. Yes they are stronger, how much, I have no idea. There must be a reason Toyota put them behind the Turbo.

you will have to change to a turbo tranny to get 23 spline all the way thru. you would be alright with 23 spline in the rear case. you would need a new 23 spline coupler for the adapter and a naw 4.7 gear set that is 23 spline. the reduction box should be alright 21 spline but the rear case gets alot of torque thru the reduction box

Thanks Gentleman...........  I know that just from gearing there is alot of stress on the rear 21 spline just because of the gearing............  Really want to know if alot of setups as mine has broken, or just how much stronger the 23 is than the 21 spline.

Thanks

I bought the 23 spline adapter and 4.7's when I went dual cases but am still running the 21 spline W56 tranny.  I don't think you have anything to worry about.  Sourcing a 23 spline Turbo tranny (R151) is going to be $$$$.

if i were you i wouldnt worry about your 21 spline t-cases with your setup. other members on this board on running either more power or lower geared axles/bigger tires than you currently are with 21 spline.

Thank you, but was wondering about numbers...........  degree's of twist, Torque, but I will settle with what I have and continue to try and break it.

Thanks.
