pondering 350 swap
« on: Sep 09, 2007, 06:05:19 PM »
ok i have a 91 pickup that i rolled and now doing frame up restoration on it and i was wondering if it hard to do a chevy 350 swap on an ifs truck? i know possible ill need a lift to clear the oil pan. but if i go with a th350 will it be hard to fabracate a front drive shaft? also when guys do the swaps do they just splice into the factory wiring harness for the ignition or buy a new wiring harness? Oh btw im planning on swapping a carburated 350 in
i love playin in the mud

I ran a carbed 350 in my old rig for years. I spliced the factory harness in. My truck was a carbed 85. I'm not sure if it'll be different if it's efi stock. You'll probably have to drop the front diff housing some if you want to leave it ifs. Also a body lift may be necessary if you don't want to cut up the floor and have a respectable air filter. As far as the Th350 goes. I know there are some adapters that put the transfer in the stock place but you gotta mess with the motor mounts to make that happen.

it's cake. you don't need many wires to run a carbed truck

very true. I'd say go for it. If it doesn't looks good to your standards they make all kinds of harness for it

The swap is relatively easy.  I had to do a 3" body lift on mine for the reason that the distributor hit the firewall.  But if you clean up the original mounts and use mounts off of a '76 blazer it drops the motor a good 2 1/2 inches and you can run a 3 inch tall air cleaner.  Wiring was simple, you just remove the computer on the passenger side quarter panel, and splice in your ignition, coil, temp, and oil sensors.  As for the front drive shaft I extended it between 6 to 8 inches.  You have to run a short style water pump, unless if you relocate the radiator.  I was actually able to use the original alternator and power steering pumps with the original brackets and some fab work.

The short water pump are from old corvettes. They are about an inch shorter. If you can find some short water pump brackets at the junk yard they are cheap. Thats what I did, just add some paint and they look new. if you want it to look more clean. I had a 2" body lift on mine

well anybody who has put a V8 in there mini trucks... will tell you this...

" having your truck Solid Axle will make things a hella lot easier, it usually elimnates oil pan problems , encountered with IFS. "

if you are do this with IFS... Get the modified oil pans.

Solid axle here. I keep thinking about building a prerunner toy with a fullwidth 14bolt and super wide a arms with a small block or beef up the frame and try and make a big block fit........

Not only corvettes, but also vans. And it is a lot easier to find one off a van than an old corvette. I have a Toyota with a 283/th400/np205. The 3" body lift is almost mandatory. And If you can find one for cheap, an early 50's Chevy radiator fits perfect with 3" body lift, and cools VERY well.

I also used a radiator from a chevy II or a nova it fit pretty nice. I ran a 2" body lift. My bro will be building a truggy with a 350 but with no body lift and will be pushing the motor back about a foot and cutting the firewall. If your not worried about cutting things up it can be done without a body lift

Go to www.advanceadapters.com They have the brackets that bolt to your stock motor mounts so you can easily install a 350, and the only thing they suggest is that you have a 3" suspension lift i believe. They also have the kits for the V6 motor swap. They will run you about $160.00

I wasn't even using a speedo. I drove mine every day. I could base it on the motor sound. well on flat land. I was going to use a auto meter guage and probably will on my new build. I'm sure someone makes an adapter. I heard of some company a while back but not sure who it was. sorry no help here
