IFS Rear Axle Swap
« on: May 03, 2004, 12:36:08 PM »
If I swap in an IFS rear axle in my 82, will it be a bolt in swap, or will I have to put new perches on the axle?

Basically Brainless is correct.  86-88 is a dirrect bolt in, the only different thing is the e-brake cable will be too short.  But you can either swap to the later cable or add extensions.  If all you can find is 89+ axles you will need to either change the perches or use the u-bolt setup from the donor truck as the perches are about 3 inches wide.

I put the bigger brakes on my 83 axle, just had to have a shop make me up some spacers to fill the gap from the smaller hub on the 83 to the bigger "hub hole" for the 90 drums :.order:
 much better :driving:

How much wider is an '86 rear axle, and what is the general consensus on wheel spacers?  BTW, minor build-up is going to begin in a couple of weeks.  Bobbed bed, ifs rear axle, chevy/yota buggy rear, used lift front.  This is all I can afford right now.

Ifs axles are 1.5" wider per side so thats a total of 3".  Id skip the chevy's and get a set of bronco II's or ranger springs for the rear.  They dont have the added length in the rear to catch on everything and they are cheaper cause not everyone uses them and there are more of them in the yards to choose from.  For the front just use your rears and longer shackles.  Way cheaper approach to mass flex. ;)  And as you know Im all about the cheap!

TY, but I've already got the parts.  LOL.  Plus, I want to do a buggy leaf.  I got the front lift springs for 50 bucks from by bud, and 83yota is getting me the chevy's for about 50.  I'm getting the ifs and a used transfer case for a couple of bills.

Nope just as long as the ubolt plates you use are made for a 3" wide spring.
