ifs brake swap
« on: Aug 16, 2007, 05:02:13 PM »
I just put a ifs rear end under my truck and the brakes are shot, can I put my old brakes off my stock rear end on the axle shafts? I just put money in my old brakes and I don't want to spend more. I have ifs rotors that I need to put on and I have heard that you need the ifs master cylinder and I dont have one yet so any info would help greatly thanks Cody

What year is your rig? If it is 85 and older the answer is no. As far as the front they will not work either unless you get FJ rotors.

I think you are talking about the front brakes, cause I am talking about the drums I just put a ifs rear axle under my truck out of an 87 and the drums are shot, I just spent money on my old drums and wondering if I can swap them, btw you can put ifs front rotors on a 85 or earlier axle it just takes a little modification.

The brakes on the IFS rear are bigger then the early brakes. You can remove the brake assemblys off the 85 axles and the IFS axles and swap them and run the drums from the 85. One of the reasons the IFS axle swap is so popular is not only the width but also the bigger brakes.

The modification to run the IFS rotors on the 85 axle is not one that I would care to do myself, maybe on a trail rig only, but on a DD I would not run it. In my opinion I do not think it is safe.

If you go to the IFS rear brakes and the IFS calipers you should swap to the IFS MC and double booster. It will work with the smaller MC, but not as well.

thanks I knew about the ifs brakes being bigger but I dont have the money right now to do a brake job, and my old brakes are perfect. Also thanks for the rotors info I thought it would be a slap and go but I was wrong, I definatly want to do the ifs rear drums and fj60 rotors for better stopping but that will be furthur down the road high steer is more important. thanks for the info thats why i asked.
