hydro assist air problem
« on: Aug 11, 2007, 03:18:07 PM »
Hi Guys I have a 1989 Yota which has been fitted with a trail gear hydro steer setup and a 2" x 6" ram, I have tried bleeding it the way they say on their forum but I still cant get the air out. There isnt a bleed screw on the steering box, the oil cooler is below the reservoir and the ram fittings are on top of the ram. Can anyone suggest any ideas on how to get the air out ?

With the engine running and the front axle off the ground, is it normal to be able to push the tyres from the side and make the ram move in and out about 1/2 an inch or should the ram be solid with the pressure from the pump holding in position?

any help will be much appreciated

Does it work when you turn the wheel and have the power it should.

You will be able to move the ram in and out by hand. it should only get pressure when you turn the steering wheel.

I didnt tap the box but someone else did, something else I found out today which doesnt help............... I disconnected the ram at both ends so i could cycle the ram without moving the wheels, with the ram fully retracted into the cylinder and with the engine running but no movement on the steering wheel, the ram starts to creep out under pressure by itself until it reach's full travel. This makes me think that the box has been tapped wrong/badly

one other question for you willy, if the ram is not under pressure when driving along (no turning of the steering wheel) what stops bump steer ?

Anyone know where I can get a right hand drive box already tapped but willing to ship to the UK ?

If you had a steering stablizer it would restrict the flow of fluid allowing it to move slowly not keep it from moving completely. Same concept here only this stablizer (ram) gets pressure when you turn the wheel one way or the other.

I would think the valve in the box i out of adjustment causing it to have pressure to one side.

This would cause it to fight you trying to turn to one side.

I just so happen to have a RH drive box out of a 94 Surf. I could tap it, but can't gaurantee it won't need to be rebuilt after. I know it works now though.

That is possible, but without seeing it, it is hard to tell.

We need to see some pictures.

Have you driven the truck yet? What makes you think there is still air in the system?

Best way to fill/bleed a new system is to fill the ram and hook up the hoses. This will leave less room for air. Then with the motor off and the front end in the air, fill the system. Then turn the wheel lock to lock, let it sit for a while, and do it all over again. Then after doing this a couple of times, start the truck up, let it run, then turn it off and let it set. Now start it and cycle it lock to lock. Let it sit and top off. It should be pretty close to good and best bet is to just carry some fluid with you and check it every so often.

Also, when the front end is in the air and the engine is running, the ram might extend. With no resistence on it, it can move a bit with the pump running.
