22RE MSD
« on: Aug 06, 2007, 09:27:16 PM »
I'm sure the answer is here somewhere but I searched and could not find it. On an 85 22re does an MSD box replace the igniter or work in conjunction with it?

With.......

See page 22

http://static.summitracing.com/global/images/instructions/msd-6200%282%291.pdf

Also see page 7,  you'll need part number 8910 (the special version, not the one usually sold) to have the tach work.    To get the special version you need to call MSD and tell them that with the 8910 you have, the engine runs, but the tach doesn't work  (they then just sent my one (that was 10 year ago)).      It's basically a ballast resistor like those in the old flourcesent lights, or a AC/AC transformer, so you might be able to make one.........

The toyota ignitions on the EFIs are actually pretty good.    I had some disposable income when I installed mine (and they were considerably cheaper at the time).

Now I wouldn't bother with a MSD on my EFI truck.

With a carb'd truck I'd might,  or if you absolutely have to have one, there's the copycat versions out there that are cheaper (summit even has there own)

thanks, thats good to know... the 79 20r ignition I'm running keeps on going but it sure looks like hell. guess I'd better just put $$ into the rest of the truck for now.
