Help with transmission
« on: Jul 25, 2007, 10:27:22 PM »
I have a real stupid trans question  I'm going to be buying a 85 4runner that has a bad motor and it has an automatic trans and t case i was wondering if i could bolt up to my 5 speed tranny and t case. i know i will need an adapter from marlin but would it work. The hole reason i ask is I'm going to build that instead of my 85 truck its just not big enough for my family and help would be nice thanks in advance.

Why would you need an adapter? Everything should be a direct bolt up. Just don't forget that you will need everything involved don't start parting out things until you complete the job. On a side note why not keep the auto I've used them offroad and they work great.

I used my 86 4Runner with an auto and took it anywhere I wanted to go with it. Now as to doubling the auto I don't think it's possible with those years the trans and tcase are a single unit they need each other to operate properly so you can't split them. I talked with Marlin many years ago about that and he said it couldn't be done, but that was many years ago and who knows what he's done now. The trans and the tcase are full auto units and need the autotrans fluid to operate so they need to be together. The only problem with the auto is going downhill, the torque converter will go into stall at low speed so you need to use the brakes more but for rock crawling I loved my auto.

4:70 or 5:29

are you talking axle gears or tcase gears?

i am assuming axle, i dont htink there is a 4.7 gearset for the axles... there is one for a gear driven tcase though

gears for your 33" tires should either be 4.88 or 5.29

5.29s might be a little bit on the low side, but if you ever plan on going to anything larger than 33s, 5.29s are what i would go with

not to steal thunder....but inchworm has two methods of running duals behind an auto.....depending on the tranny......one....RUN A DIVORCED TOY CASE...spendy and LONG drivetrain....with extra parts hanging down that you dont need, but you could make it work, or run the adapter....both are really spendy...but both can be done.....
Sand, what fun, drop pressure to 12psi, stock tires are still digging, can't afford to get stuck, 8psi, still not working. Find a place to GET OUT, air up, un-lock hubs,  WAIT whats this, hubs are UN-LOCKED already. 2wd, 8psi, stock tires, Oregon sand dunes.
