What I did on my summer vacation
« on: Jul 14, 2007, 12:32:47 AM »
My daughter is asking me to send pictures as I travel this next week or  so. I figured I would share some of them with you as I travel. Left western Washington this morning & traveled towards Idaho. I ended up in Republic, Wa tonight after visiting my neighbors in Curlew by the Canadian border.
Banks Lake, used to generate power during peak demand. Water is pumped into the lake when demand is low. It is 18 miles long. A large fire is making it hazy

The huge town of Curlew,WA 108 people total from beginning of the road that leads to my land. I am just learning how to use the camera so bear with me. I should be taking pictures of Priest Lake in Idaho tommorow unless Homeland Security has the road closed

Sadly I think that's true of any dams here anymore.  Used to be able to bang your boat right next to shasta dam and hammer the salmon, now you can't get within 1000 feet

How much higher does banks lake get when they pump in the water?

Prismo, it was great to meet you yesterday.  Glad we could help with the hardline.  I'm grateful for the roofing help!  We'll come visit you in WA one day.

I finally have internet access. Stopped at the coffee shop. First off, thanks so much to Chris & Shawn for the awesome help with the hardline! Shawn wouldn't even let me work on the truck, he only let me push the clutch pedal when we were bleeding the system.
Back to my travels, I left Washington on Saturday via a narrow dirt pass out of Metaline Falls, about a 40 mile drive. This is Sullivan Lake on the way out to the pass.

The trail I took to my campsite, it was almost grown in all the way across.  I was hoping I wouldn't have to go back, there were no places to turn around for the first mile

The Upper Priest River was 30 feet away. This was one of the coolest campsites I have found in years, closest person was at least 3 miles away. I rocked the music at 11 until late.

Maybe I missed a post somewhere else. Is you vacation just for traveling around or is it a work travel thing? Did you already know aobut all these places or are you exploring?
And you are traveling alone?
I don't know that I could camp 3 miles from no one out in the forest all by myself.   :sheerterror:
The pictures are all so cool! That waterfall is gorgeous!

makes me want to go travl'n.  How are you getting internet access.  If your battery is getting low, just stop by a walmart next time you get a chance, pick up a power inverter and plug it in.  I cant tell if you are using a verizon wireless card or if you keep going into coffee shops to use their internet.  have fun on you travels man.

bt it changes O.K., I apologize for being slow here. First some answers to your questions:
How much higher does banks lake get when they pump in the water?
It varies, but I have seen a 6 foot difference in high water marks in the times I have been out there. I doubt it changes very quickly as it is so big
Maybe I missed a post somewhere else. Is you vacation just for traveling around or is it a work travel thing? Did you already know aobut all these places or are you exploring?
And you are traveling alone?
It's my idea of a vacation lol Priest River was new to me, some of the other places I have gone I have visited on other trips. I am all by my widdle lonesome.

I am getting access in a motel tonight. The other day I was in a coffee shop but they had no plug in :dunno: I do have a 750 watt inverter hardwired in the truck to power the laptop & GPS for mapping.

A picture of some old growth cedars at the Stagger In campground. They were 8 or 9ft in diameter

Got some pictures re-sized so here we go again. Before the laptop took a dive I was posting pictures of the Priest River. I have one last picture of the river where I fished (and caught zip). The wildflowers were everywhere, the Huckleberrys were ripe and they were good.

From the Priest River I drove to Sandpoint,Id and on into Montana. I drove to Libby,MT on the Kootenai River with plans of camping & fishing the river. I arrived in Libby at 6pm and it was still 102F so I made an instant decision to head back into the cooler mountains. I found a lake with a campground on the map around 25 miles from the highway so off on the dirt roads I went again. I ended up at Howard Lake in the Cabinet Mountains, it was only 85F so it ended up being a good choice. A picture of the lake.

I cooked my steak dinner over a very small campfire due to the very dry condition of the forest. Spruce smoked steak ain't half bad when you are tired & hungry. The next morning I decided to explore and asked a lady doing survey work for the forest service where to find the highest road in the area. I always like to get the furthest out I can when I visit a new area. 40 miles from the highway I noticed the hard line to my slave cylinder was leaking a lot (maybe that's why the clutch felt a little weird, duh). After figuring out what was causing the problem I attempted to repair the bunged up fitting with thread tape. It leaked a little less, kind of. Pictures of the Cabinet Mtns. from my repair spot, at least it was a nice view.

So by now you must have figured out I made it out or I wouldn't be posting this, except for maybe UncleJP (only kidding Unc). I limped my way 70 miles to Kalispell near Glacier National Park because it was the only town of any size near where I came out on the highway. Headed to the Toyota dealership to see if they had my part in stock. As I pulled up a salesman walked out to the truck and started asking questions about it. He turned out to be MT4Runner of all people. He hooked me up with PDC_RNR & viola my problem was as good as fixed(thanks again guys, come out & see me). The next night I stayed at my former neighbors place in Whitefish, the next town north.  Trout of Death, I am using a cheap Kodak digital. I left the Nikon at home. A picture of my buddies "cabin".
