66 fj40 land cruiser VS. 76 fj40 pros &cons
« on: May 05, 2007, 09:33:44 AM »
I have a 66 fj40 cruzer thats been sitting for a while, basically stock with an exception of a 4speed trans I was  told out of an old ups truck. Due to my lack of time, Its been sitting since I bought it.Now I want to  build up cruzer.I seen a 76 fj 40 basically stock with an exception of the marlin transfer case rebuild.but overall needs more work to get running, been sitting a while . But if I,am going to build something wich woud I be better off with? smog/gears etc. any input would be appreciated. TX.

The best way to go is chev 350 tbi/inj 465 trans 3 speed case. Do some searching on the web you will find a lot of different ways to do it. As far as cash$ go's it would be the most reasonable :twocents:

is this your location?  :dunno:

If you are in CA, there are no smog laws governing the '66.  The '76 would have to pass smog.  I would recommend the '66, simply because you already own it.  If you plan on doing a complete build up, it won't really matter in the long run.  What condition is the '66 in?  rust?  etc.

I somehow cut myself short? One thing that did cross my mind,if I was to buy the 76 FJ40. Would it be worth my while to swap differentials & the marlin crawler transfer case, with my 66. Then put the 76 back with the stock 66 under-carriage,then sell it? :dunno:

is the '66 in running shape?

I don't know much about the cruisers, so  I can't help you there, but if it were me, I think I'd stick with the '66, especially if it is currently running.

The earlier frames seem to rust less then later models, but in Cali that may not as much of an issue as other places. I would personally combine the two and make one good one. If you go with the I6 motor the 76 is a 2F and a better motor that can be desmogged in the '66 frame. The 76 would have disk brakes and birfields on the front and fine spline rear axles. The 66 axles make good boat achors.... so I'm told. The 4 speed in the 66 may be a sm420 or sm465, either would be good with the early (3 speed) t-case in the 66. The 76 t-case (4 speed) doesn't have as low a gear as the 3 speed. Combine 'em, sell the extra parts and have fun.

i'd build the 66. put some later axles under it and you're good to go. i personally like the looks of the earlier cruisers better as well.....
