1967 jeep m715
« on: Apr 20, 2007, 08:02:33 PM »
My buddys dad is giving him his old 1967 jeep m715 with a lame flatbed it had built on it and a very good running small block 350 under the hood with a 4speed tranny. It just got a new clutch put in and all the steering linkages were tightened up and some other good stuff.  Were gonna fab up the suspension and make this thing a trail rig. Maybe go with some 35"s or 33"s. Its got fullsize axles. This thing is a freaking beast, its massive. About completly opposite from my toyota.  Were gonna go wheeling a lot so I hope this thing is ok on the trail! Ill get some pictures when I can, its parked near my house.

Don't they come with like 37" tires or bigger stock?

Dude,
I had a 1968 M715. If you do a spring over in the front, and a shackle reversal in the rear, you can easily fit 44's, I put 38" boggers on mine without any modifications. If the rest of the running gear is stock behind the motor, you have a t-98 4 speed, a Dana 200, which is my understanding similar to a Dana 300, but it had bushings instead of bearings, which makes it stronger, but it will heat up if you drive it over 60 mph and boil the oil out. I filled my t-case with synthetic and I didn't have any problems. The axles will be a Dana 60 in the front, and a Dana 70 in the rear with 5.38:1 gears. Mine had a metal top that was basically sheet metal formed over the soft top framework. When I removed the sheet metal, I could fold down my windshield. I sold it years ago, and kind of regret it ever since.

dude
his does the same thing with the windshield. I dont think it will fit 38s, it doesnt look like it on the front. oh ya but if we lifted it....he has a welder too which is a HELLA GOOD THING.  The bed it has is so :stopit: you cant imagine. Its wider than the truck and its all made of wood and its hardly even attached to the frame. Its rediculous. Some dumb drunk ass shadetree mechanic must have tried to build it because its really lame. We will make a flat bed or something.  The bed has to go. If I remember, the springs are already on top of the axles, that was one of the first things I looked for when I saw it. The frame and suspension is all rusty though
Do these things wheel good? It seriously is a TANK...it doesnt look like much of a wheeler to me.  He has a car, so this will be a trail truck. Although it must stay street legal so we can drive it to the trails. We will keep it under 55 probably.  He told me his dad said you cant drive over 60 cause itll burn up the diffs. I dont mind saving gas anyways.

No. It has stock tires and they are about the size of my foot. Which is small for a tire. They are actually bigger than my foot..probably 27inches or less. Like a small car tire.  :stopit: :stopit: :stopit: :stopit: :stopit:. He gets his lisence this week so well have to take it up to our nearest 4x4 park and try it out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My dad had one when I was a kid, some of the later years had higher gearing like 3.73 mostly for what my dad said was "civil service" meaning they were utility trucks for driving around the base or in town and they had smaller tires.  There is a huge surplus market with tons of parts for these things.  Do they wheel good? stock, not really my dad put a 455 olds in his and had the spring packs rebuilt and fit some gumbo monster mudders on it but I can't remember how big.  We would take it out to Azna Borrego and wheel it but it didn't do well in the twisty stuff, the wagoneer did better but set up better than ours was (old school)they can be un stoppable. Look for the Top truck challange DVD with the M715 from New Jersey that thing is awesome.
