Like a 3sge? 185 hp. That's only 27hp melee than a 3rz. With his methods of madness he could easily turbo a 3rz and make 300hp.

Now a supercharged 1gr would be sweet in my book.

Look into the BEAMS engine out of the Toyota Altezza from Japan.  They are 4 cylinder and can be found with a 6 speed manual trans and have close to 200 hp.  Plus, they are pretty sexy looking for a 4cyl.

I have actually been looking at those, and I am actually interested in that route. I do actually want an automatic this time, as I have massive feet and with tubbing the firewall for the tires pedal space becomes a premium. My blue truck had 3 pedals and was a little difficult for me to drive with shoes on. My red truck I was building with an automatic. I read that the gen 5 3SGE manual engines made 210 HP and the automatic made 200 HP. I feel like that would be plenty for such a light truck, and the automatics are a few hundred bucks cheaper. They utilize the A340 transmission, which I am familiar with. I was also looking at the 2JZ, 1UZ, and LS motors. My biggest concern is going to be trying to keep a stock hood, so the shortest one will win. I also thought about the Caldina 3SGE with a FWD transmission mounted in the bed, although it looks pretty wide. Or a transaxle, but that is rather pricey. So I'm still brainstorming. I did pick up a 350Z rear differential, so whatever I do I am planning full independent suspension.

3RZ is a Tacoma motor? Wouldn't I need to rebuild it with lower compression to turbo it? I heard 1UZ will live on stock internals with 5 lbs of boost. If love to end up with 3-400 HP, I think it would be fun in a 2500 lb truck. The 1UZ looks big to me from pictures, I need to get access to some of these motors to measure them, because I really don't want to cowl the hood, but the hood is short on this body style so I may have to live with this. I would probably be ok with a cowl if it where for 400 HP.

I will have to look up the 1GR, I'm not familiar with that one.

There is a guy about an hour from me that is routinely parting out first gen Tacomas. I'm kind of interested in the JDM route due to the low mileage motors. Although whatever I do I think I will need to find someone for tuning. I really like the 2JZ idea, or even 1JZ, but I think I will have to set it back into the firewall a few inches due to being an I6. The engine bay on this truck is tiny.

I do plan to build a full chassis this time, so sump location isn't a concern for me, I will just design the steering around it. I'm open to engine suggestions though, as long as I can put an automatic behind it. I'd like to finalize my selection in the next few months so I can locate one and start designing the suspension.

And turbo(s) are not out of the question. I can build a header no problem. I will just need to find a local tuner, or learn how to do it myself. But computers are not my best friend.

Okay so looking at the 1GR, it's a V6 that started production in 2002 and is used in the current Tacomas and 4Runners?

Sooo... I bought a 2004 4Runner 2WD with a blown head gasket for $500. My plan was to flip it, but my Dodge got hit last winter and I have been driving it since then while collecting parts to fix the Dodge. I was planning to sell it once I fixed the Dodge, but maybe I should use it as a donor vehicle since I have the whole thing, and I've only got about $1200 into it. It's got 215k miles so I would probably need to rebuild the motor and transmission, especially if I was to turbo it. It's decently quick as is, at least in comparison to my old Toyota trucks.

My 1gr in the 06 tacoma is almost knocking on 400k miles door. Still runs like a raped ape. No noise, no issues whatsoever. I would have zero hesitation in boosting a 200k 1gr.

Well shoot. I texted my laser cutting guy, he said he can make header flanges for it. Since I can't seem to find any online. The transmission still feels pretty good right now too. Maybe I stumbled into the right beater car.

Twisted,
If you boost any of these engines, your best bet is to get a stand-alone fuel management system.  After talking to several guys on forums about stand alone systems for Toyotas, I've found Gabe Salazar is the guy to talk to.  He's up on the latest and greatest products for Toyotas.
He used to do a bunch of engine building and tuning for LC Engineering, now he has his own shop in Lake Havasu City.  He's the guy that Fire Guys Racing had tune their race truck and build the harness for it.

Can he do it remotely? I was under the impression I would need to have a local tuner to bring the vehicle to. I'm pretty far from Lake Havasu. I figured the tuner would probably dictate what stand alone system to use based on what they like working with. I know even if I just delete the cats I would need a tune.

So I was thinking, a 1GR runs 10:1 compression (at least mine, the early model) which seems like a high compression ratio to apply boost to. But I read about Paradise Racing pushing high boost with 10:1 Arias pistons and Cometic head gaskets, so I guess it can be done.

I also read on Race Dezert someone said the motor is almost 36" tall from oil pan to intake. I need to measure mine tomorrow. I need something more in the realm of 26".

I know there is a new stand alone system that he can tune remotely over Wifi.  I think it's a Haltech system.  I'm pretty sure that the initial tune should be done on site while on a dyno though.

So I think I'm going to put the engine in the bed. Adapters are available for GM Ecotec, Ford Ecoboost, VW VR6, GM LS, Toyota 1UZ, Alfa Romeo Boxer, Mazda 12A or 13B Rotary, or Honda K24.

From what I understand about these Subaru transaxle they will live happily around 350whp with a limited slip if you don't abuse them. So the engine probably needs to stay under 400hp. Some people have pushed more power through them, but apparently they become a ticking time bomb at some point. But the company making the adapters has put a few LS1s against them with around 340-360whp and they are still kicking after 5 years.

Found an LS motor today that was too cheap to pass up. Most everything I will need is there, aside from the DBW pedal and controller.
