Gear chewer
« on: Mar 05, 2007, 08:46:25 AM »
My buddies rig has gone through at least three sets of gears on his front end. Yukons, set up by three different guys, detriot locker, 5.29s. Yes the rear is also 5.29.
Question is: He is running a square driveshaft that is pretty loose where it slips. Could this make a vibration that could be causing the housing to flex enough to take the top half of ALL the ring gear teeth off? Each time they look the same, all the teeth are gone. He took alot of time on break in the last time & still had this same failure.
Any ideas are appreciated.

Tell him to buy Precision gears and have them set up by Gearman at River City Differentials.

i have never heard of a square driveline causing a ring and pinion failure.  tell him to get a different third member housing if he hasn't already.

what are the specs on his truck? if hes running longs and a spool and 44s and crazy on the gas pedal, i could see that being an issue......

He has 30spline longs, detriot locker, Toy axle, 5.29's, 38" Toyos. Doesn't hammer it any worse than I do & I'm running 39.5 IROKs. This has happened on 2 different housings also.

Really sounds like the gears are being setup wrong.

Dang, took me an hour to find this thread.

So you have good luck with these guys Mini?  I just went on randys ring and pinions website and they don't even list old toyotas anymore.  so I thought I would find something closer.

:yesnod:  I've dealt with them before too.  Great guys, and I haven't had any problems with the gear setup

If you keep eating gears I'd definately measure the run out.
