4Runner rear hatch question
« on: Jan 14, 2007, 08:50:28 PM »
Can I remove this rod from the bottom of the hatch??  It's going to be in my way when I built a rear bumper for it in the future.

You can remove it, it's the spring assist that helps take some of the weight out of the tail gate when you close it.

Although now that I look at it again, it might also be what stops the tail gate from going below flat. You may have to use a cable or something to keep the gate from coming down and hitting your bumper.

So if I stand on the rear tailgate, that little rod is what is holding me up?  That's scary :)

nah, there should be two metal straps on the inside portion of the gate  where it limits the travel of the gate. that little bar is a torsion bar that reduces the weight comming down immediately.

you can remove it altho its there cus of the added weight of the rear gate (glass and tracks and such) if its gonna get tossed just cut it off while the gate is in the up position so theres little tension on it.

you can remove that little rod if you must.... it helps slow the load from slamming the tailgate down because the tailgate has glass in it..... a pickup truck doesn't have the little rod, but it also doesn't have glass inside it... i would just remove it and be careful when opening it

Trying to remeber if the 4Runner has any limiters other than the rod. If it has the limit strap then yes you can toss it if not your gate will not stop until it hits something.

Sure, which piece are you talking about?  The piece that bolts to the support of the 4Runner that the metal rod slides on?  Middle of second picture, left side?

this is just a suggestion but why not just drop the bar without hacking it to peices and see if anyone wants it? just a suggestion. i know some people look for parts like that.

I wasn't planning on hacking it up but I've got used old parts laying around from three different trucks.  I'm kinda running out of space to house the mini toyota junkyard I've collected :)
