that's interesting...could help me in the future, i'm thinking about putting an '82-83 sr5 cluster in my truck.  i  just like the later model cluster better than the stock '79 sport cluster, has the tach in a nice big gauge instead of the little one on mine

Did the swap out over the weekend using Brandon's wiring info and it works great! A couple of the wire colors were different than what is listed, but I just used the connector numbers and everything works perfect!  :driving:

Had to run a new wire for the tach and I wound up connecting it directly to the back of the circuit board where the screw is because I couldn't find a source for the extra connector I needed for the plug.  :dunno:

Good job, Brandon  :bowdown:

#14 tach input to tach lead at ignitor.

you can use either the plugged lead or the one I used in the pic, both send a tach signal

I cut off the other end from the pnp long enough back so that it just plugged in making a factory looking connection. Your clip is easy though, nice..

I have answered this question a bunch of times using the pic to help so I figured I'd throw it in here. Good idea on the plug too

Hey if anyone with knowledge is still even looking at this thread...

First of all, great write-up. I did the swap a couple months ago using it and it worked great. The one thing I don't feel like it covers is the separate oil & volt gauge. My truck doesn't have this but I've got one in the mail that will be here tomorrow. I have no idea how it hooks up. Since my cluster has an idiot light for charge & oil, it seems like the sending unit must connect to both clusters. So does this mini-cluster just connect to my main cluster, or what? If so, where does it connect (which plug number)?

totally independant..

if you get the harness that goes with it then there isn't much to write about - and since that stuff isn't in the non sr5 harness (keep the dummy in your main gauges) that isn't related. You need to go get a sending unit (not for a light) for the oil and put it in another spot in the block and run a wire from it to the gauge. There will also be a ground and backlight.

The volt just needs +. You probably want to tie into the factory dash lighting so you get the dimming though..

BTW I have an 83 SR5 gauge for sale in the classifieds :)

Thank you. So you're saying that I need two sending units? One for the idiot light in the SR5 main cluster, and one for the gauge in the separate cluster?
I've already bought the SR5 unit, pretty sure I've still got the old non-SR5 unit laying around somewhere...

Ok, so they are independant, and aside from wiring the small cluster into the dash lights maybe, the only wiring is the grounds, and connecting a wire to the sending unit? What about the voltimeter gauge? Thanks for the help! It'll be nice to finally see my oil pressure. Plus, gauges are cool.

Maybe somebody else will want that cluster. I've had my SR5 cluster installed for a few months now, and the oil & volt gauges should be here tomorrow.

Voltmeter just goes to any + (preferably a key on aka something that doesn't have power with the key off).

an ammeter would be a different story but voltage is easy..

I had that housing but ran a manual oil pressure gauge (electrical gremlins don't affect those), can't recall the other gauge I ran in it.

Nice thing about that housing is that any gauge will fit right into it..

There are 4 wires coming out of each gauge, ending in a plug. You don't happen to know what color wire is for what, do you?

I finished up the swap over the weekend so I figured I'd post a little more about how to get the separate oil & volt cluster up & working. I started with this diagram which lets you know what it would tie into if it had been wired for it from the factory.

So you look at what each wire in the gauges does and find the number on the diagram. I then cut the plugs off & labled the wires. Some on the voltmeter were a different color than the diagram said, but they were in the right location in the plug, so it worked out.

Looking at the diagram, you can see that the oil & volt gauge ties into the main cluster. It shows which wires on the separate gauge connect to which wires on the main gauge. Here's what I came up with:

19 & 21(oil) -----> 17
18 & 22---------->6
21(volt) & 23----->12
24---------------> Oil sending unit
20---------------> Ground

Notice there is a 21 on each gauge for some reason.

Splicing into main cluster wires

And connecting those to the new cluster (I used 16 gauge wire)

I need to pull the piece that actually connects the wire to the oil sending unit from a junkyard. I just wrapped the wire around the connection on the sending unit which will work for now, but I should do it right. I'll just get someone to cut the connector off a dead truck, and I'll splice it into mine. It all works! I've got illumination and volt & oil pressure readings now finally.

I've got a 1982 basic model and I've installed the SR5 cluster. I used the new pin-outs and everything is working except the tach. I've read through the threads and followed the instructions but without success. I know the gauges worked before. I've followed the back of the panel to the #14 screw for the tach, attached a wire there and then tried both the plugged end and the other wire as shown in some of the earlier photos. Any trouble shooting thoughts out there? Thanks.

it is basically just one wire to the coil - the plug goes to the coil but if there is a connection reason for some reason go straight to the coil. Tachs are pretty easy to wire..

If it isn't working it might.. not be working ;)

I wouldn't use the screw, I'd use the actual spot on the plug in back of the cluster. Or is that what you mean? I had to do it a couple times...and when I pulled my cluster again to splice the oil & volt gauges in and reinstalled it, my tach wasn't working. I just had to pull the cluster again, wiggle the tach wire and make sure it was positioned right, and when I put it all back together it was working again.

Anyways I just took the wire, stripped some rubber off, doubled the stripped part over itself and stuffed it into the correct spot in the plug then plugged the plug back into the back of the gauge. I remember it taking a couple times reinstalling it before it finally worked.

Edit- you can see in my "splicing into main cluster" photo where I put the tach wire. It's the thicker blue one coming out of the plug.

as far as the connection to the coil goes, I used a tester to check for voltage coming out of the plugs shown on an earlier picture by someone else. The thread said that you could attach the tach to either the plugged end (I'm assuming its the one with the rubber 'plug') or splice as shown in the pic to the other plug (each is supposed to give a signal). When I tested each connection I got voltage coming out of the one with the rubber plug but not the other one. Am I missing something here? Short of having a ground issue with my tester, it would seem that only the one with the rubber plug is giving me power (signal) and should work for the tach.

I also have an 82 non-sr5 model. Instead of exactly replicating the pin-outs above I tried to just hook up one gauge with the new pin configuration and it didn't work. I tried to hook up the fuel gauge with the new pin-outs and nothing happened. Do you have to do all of the pin-outs before anything will work? Is the 82 non-sr5 configured exactly like an 83 non-sr5 model? I'm asking because the wire colors are also not matching up. thanks

If you've got a shop manual it should get you there. The wire colors didn't all match up for me either, but the locations did. Also, don't compare this pinout to the shop manual, because they don't match. This pinout counts every wire slot location in the plugs, where the manual only counts the ones with wires in them, so it comes up with a smaller number. Hopefully the manual will do it for you! My truck didn't match up perfectly with what color the manual talked about either, but I have an '83, and an '83 manual...who knows.

I did this to my 83 too. used a manel o/p gage too. and I found a tach at autozoned that I was able to fit after
taking out the "plug" where the clock was meant to go.
A good day working, that's just sick :reg:

Trying to install an SR5 cluster in my 85 4runner but I don't seem to have the matching tach wire plugs as the helpful KYOTA pic. I'd rather not splice into the IGN wire (yellow one I think), so I figured I post-up a pic and see what y'all think.

Only two green plugs coming out of the ignition box. The one on the left hops over to the other side of the engine bay and the one on the right feeds into a wiring harness close by.

Also, I've already plugged the cluster in and confirmed that the tach is not working, so I don't think it's pre-wired up for me.

Any ideas?

I'm going to go re-read the ignition inspection section of the FSM in case I missed something relevant.

I'd try the 84-89 section. There are some threads out there (on Yotatech in the '84-85 section for example) on this swap. If you have a 22RE, everything should work. I guess if you've got a 22R, you do need to run a tach wire. My green plug had nothing coming out of it, so I'm not sure what you've got going on. I thought that plug was there to hook up an rpm guage for setting timing and trouble shooting problems and all that, so it's weird that it would have something plugged into it.
