Rear Wheel Antilock
« on: Dec 22, 2006, 01:59:25 PM »
I have a 91 4runner, V6 with the RWAL thing on the passenger side frame rail, underneath the power steering pump.
I am swapping in a 22re, which has the power steering pump on the drivers side.  Rather than running power steering lines over to the RWAL, can I just leave them disconnectd from the RWAL, and still keep "standard" braking manners?
Thanks,
Zac

Hey Zac,

I am assuming your 4Runner came with ABS its wiring is intertwined with the engine's harness, correct?

If you are looking to just bypass the ABS system, then I would guess that just connecting the existing rear brake lines to the rear output of the brake mastercylinder would not be a problem.

This is a coil rear suspension, correct?
It has 2 individual e-brake cables, correct?
Is it cable or electronic speed sensored?
Does the ABS sensor atop the rear diff still have its wiring intact?

Yup, It had the ABS intergrated into the engine harness. It has an electronic speed sensor, with the ABS sensor on the rear diff still intact. There are 2 e-brake cables, and it has coils.
There is an additional brake line output on the Brake Master Cylinder, that runs to the RWAL power steering thing, then exits the power steering RWAL and runs back to the rear brake proportioning valve.
I think if I block off the additional master cylinder output, and block off the input for the ABS on the brake proportioning valve, It should work allright...What do you think?
Thanks,
Zac

I removed all of that plumbing when I did my engine conversion on my runner. I can't remember exactly what I did, but it seemed like I was able to use a T or something that was already in the system to connect everything straight from the master cyl. I think (if my memory is worth a s#%t) that it all connected up on the pass side by the lower inner fender well.
I had no ill effects after doing this.
Good luck, wish I could give a little more detailed info.

Hey,
Thanks for the info!  I just went and spliced it all together, using a double female fitting on top of the frame rail.  looks like it should work pretty well!
Thanks again,
Zac
