Later model 5 sp Tranny in 82

I recently blew my tranny in my 82 reg cab short bed.  Ive been told that a stronger tranny out of the later 80s trucks is much stronger but requires some mods.. i have a tranny from an 88 and want to see what it would take to swap it

does anyone have any more information on this swap? if so it would be greatly appreciated.

it takes  cutting your driveshafts and moving the crossmember,  i strongly suggest a Marlin L52HD,  i have one in my 79  :psss:  bolts to the first gen  with no mods  and uses  the later  trucks  longer tranny  guts  in the shorter case

would love to be able to buy a good tranny for my truck.. lack of funds does not allow for that tho...

ive heard that you have to cut the drivelines.. i have the drivelines from the newer truck... shouldnt they bolt right up..

its the same wheelbase and everything

It should work fine to use the newer model shafts, but you will have to redrill or replace the pinion/transfercase flanges. Your stock crossmember will be too far foward to make this swap as easy as useing the shorter trans.

Yes, you can definately use the newer driveshafts. Just drill the new hole pattern into the flanges 45° to the existing holes.
We were able to just use the ends of the new driveshaft as a template, used a sharpie to mark the holes then drilled.

Supposedly you can flip the crossmember around backwards and bolt up to two of the existing holes, and weld some angle iron on for the other two. i just had Bud at Budbuilt make me a crossmember. :)

He sells one now for the 1st gens that will bolt to your existing frame mounts.

My tranny tunnel was already hacked up from a PO, so I cant tell you if you will have to cut the shifter hole or not.

Basically this is all it takes.

Just finished the swap and it wasnt as hard as i thought it would be.  the hardest part was getting the crossmember mounted to the transfercase. other than that fairly simple.. i did it in 5 days with only working after work.

i dont have many pics of the tear down or build up but i can take some pics of the finished product.  will do that tonight and try and get some pics posted as fast as possible..  when i do that ill do a short write-up about the swap
