1990 Ext. cab to build or not to build
« on: Dec 17, 2006, 11:31:14 AM »
I just picked up a 1990 clean clean clean ext. cab yota sr5 with 74,000 auto for $800. I want to do some things with it but Im kinda stuck. Either pull out the ifs and do a swap or leave it and lift it and use it as a daily driver. I have a 85 already so I am leaning towards just putting a little lift with some 33s or 35s with 4:88's and a locker in the rear. Ok so what I am asking is can I find a 4-6 inch lift for it? I know I can't do a body lift cause it is auto but I want to clear a 35 without cuttin it up its clean!

Superlift, Procomp, Rancho, and Trailmaster all offer 4" lift kits for the 3rd gen pickup. You can clear 33" tires no problem and with just a touch of clearancing on the firewall. Chaos fab and downey also make lifts for these, but I believe they both are weld on and much more expensive. If you are just looking for something to clear bigger tires I would just go with the bolt on. These are just my opinions. I've used the Superlift personally and it worked well.

Also if you need more clearance than the lift gives you could also get a set of fiberglass bulge fenders.

You're going to want 5.29's for a daily driver with 35's (or even 33's) if you keep the auto. Otherwise it's going to be pretty gutless. Sounds like a good find though!

I am working on getting pics put up. I droped my camera in the sand so it doesn't work I will get pics as soon as I can and show what I have done to it. Thank you for the info please keep it comming. On another note, it was said that if I ran 4:88s it would be gutless... well riddle me this one, I have an 85 carbed stock gears on 36 tsl sx's and I raced my buddy in his yota he has 5:71s with 42 iroks and he is efi and I pulled him. I honestly don't get it. He isn't the only yota I have beat. (Not to be a street racer I just was comparing the set ups between my truck and others)

how expensive would it be to convert it to stick? Has anyone done it? (I'm sure that it has been done many times) but what are the steps and things needed?

How much heavier do you think 42" iroks are over 36" tsl sx's? I mean, you're kind of comparing apples to oranges in the sense that there are a bunch of different factors going into why you're truck beat his and those factors go far and beyond just gears. Not that it matters anyway, since (i presume) your 85 was a stick and your 90 is an auto. Look around and see what gears people are running in their DD auto trucks, or better yet, think about the fact that from the factory, 4.30's were needed to move stock size tires... so 4.88 with 35's is gonna be way off.  :twocents:

that explains a lot. Thank you, I didn't know that auto's have 4:30 gears. I thought it was a 4:10. duh it makes sense.  :smack: I was thinking of pulling out the auto and putting in a manual I already asked this but how hard is it? and why cant you put a body lift on an automatic?
