1990 3.0 problems (not mine! :woohoo: )
« on: Dec 04, 2006, 02:17:11 PM »
Posting to get a truck fixed for a buddy (mikerob)  so we can go wheeling again.  He's got a 3.0 that he just redid the heads on, and also adjusted the valve shims back to factory specs.  Everything is back together, but we can't get the truck started.  We've looked at all the grounds, but we think it is something bigger.  He also had a shop try to do some work, and they wound up being incompetent, so he's got the truck back again.  here are the problems, and what we've tried

1. Fuel pump isn't working.  No sounds, clicking, whining, anything.
2. not getting spark
3.  Check engine light is not coming on during startup (all the other lights turn on, but the ECU light doesn't.  On my truck (same model)  it does.)

1. checked EFI relay, and his was bad.  Replaced it with the one from my truck, and it didn't change anything.
2. checked resistance on the AFM, and its good.

we haven't done much past this point, but I did have a few questions.
We still need to check the coil and ignitor, we just haven't done it yet

1. How is the computer grounded?  the shop pulled his, and it is hooked up, but they didn't bolt it back into place.  Is it grounded by the bracketry?
2. there is another relay under the dash called the circuit opening relay.  what exactly does this do?

The reason I ask is before he took it to the shop, we had fuel, and we had spark (and the check engine light came on at startup)  so we want to look at where the shop could have gone wrong first.

thanks

I would try swaping the computer with yours.  Make sure that the wring harness for the rear of the truck is pluged in.

strange that the shop you took it to make it lose spark and fuel.  I am  only getting started to under stand the 3.0 set up, wish I could tell you more!

trust me, the more you get to know it, the more confusing it is :hahaha:  I did have a spare computer laying around, not sure whether or not its good, but I let him borrow it to see if it helps.  We'll see what happens.
