ahhh engine running rough
« on: Nov 29, 2006, 05:34:16 PM »
i've got an 85 runner 22RE, i just replaced the chain cover gasket, which means almost the entire engine had to be dissembled, now i've got everything back together. and i was pretty careful to make sure to mark all the hoses and wires. but now that i have everything back together the truck will start but it takes some effort and when i get it running it's really rough. in addition my air flo sensor is now slapping open and shut, and being very noisy. i can't figure out why the sensor should be so loud, because i didn't even touch it. so i'm at a loss as to what to do. any thoughts would be greatly appricaited. i'm not a master mechanic by any means so i may have made some stupid mistake (which i'm kinda figuring it is) thanks in advance. Jon

Prob got it 180 out. Set it at tdc and point the rotor at the first cylinder then time it from there.

i did check the dis. a few times, aimed it at #1,  then pulled it out and went a tooth to the right and left, wouldn't run , i'm pretty sure i have it on the right tooth, but i'm always willing to double check myself.

make sure its on TDC on the COMPRESSION stroke (both valve rockers will be slightly loose)
if it isnt, you may have a bent valve, 22re is an interference type head.
you could pull the plugs and check compression...
my MAF slaps around too, doesnt affect a thing.

Disconnect any grounds that you forgot to reconnect?  Like at the back of the head or something?

Is the battery ground making good contact to the terminal...my truck runs like CRAP if the battery ground isn't connected well.

I assume you have adjusted the timing by rotating the dist.  and that didn't get you a decent idle?

I bet it is electrical.  Keep checking grounds...
IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5
