need some help on a custom snorkel....
« on: Nov 08, 2006, 10:44:45 AM »
So it seems that i like to get water into my intake and keeps making the engine light come on. YA, it makes me wanna  :rivers: everytime i see that light come on. My truck it so well documented by the first owner that it has all the paper work for all the mechanical or anything work thats been done to it since it was born.

Usually i don't post any new threads unless i have to, i searched for a thread on snorkel's, but none came up. So here i am asking y'all how or where i can go to get supply's to make my own custom snorkel.

I have a 91 Toyota p/u EXT CAB 4x4 with and V6, along with that it also has K&N Cold Air. What i want to do is build a box around the K&N and then run a tube through the fender up the cab and to the roof (yes on the outside of the truck). My questions is: Has someone already done a build up on this? Is there some where i can go to get an actual snorkel?? and if i do the build up on it, does anyone want me to post it on the forum??

Thanks for your input--

We need food, so of course you must do a build up on a home-made snorkle. We can never do without new ideas. That's what makes our rigs what they are today, most come from other ideas and then someone else improves on that idea and so on and so on.

I've seen some PVC snorkles that look good and work better than those store bought kind. If you do it right and mock it up before you cut they look just as good as the mass-produced kind.

I will deffenetly be doing a PVC snorkel, and will be taking many many pics while doing the build. I am going to be making many builds prior to making the actual snorkel. When i get it down pact, then i will produce the build info and also make myself a seller of them, so if anyone wants to buy one with out the cost of doing it them selves or not having enough time, then i am more than willing to sell em... but i have to get to that stage first...

The only thing i think i am going to have problems with is the snorkel top, but i'm sure ya'll can give me some insite on what to do... thank you guys/gals...

My brother Scott recently bought this rig and here's the PVC snorkle it has, not exactly a Toyota but if you notice it has a K&N filter on top. It is a little tall so the filter got smashed on a tree but it is still there a was still working.

Ok, back to snorkel's.. a couple of problems i can see -

A) Wouldn't water still get into the intake because it's completely exposed like that...
B) Maybe some one can build a cage to fit around various types of air filters so they don't get smashed....

I bought a bunch of supply's last night, and i am starting to make some designs, it's not yet ready for the build up yet, but it will be soon.

Here you can see the top of it. It works great, but the distributer was not sealed and that is what eventually killed it......

I thought about running one into the cab...but the intake noise would be deafening! Unless you would make a "switchable" snorkel so you could run it in a more normal routing until you needed to snorkel.

The design i was originally thinking about was going to be tubed into the cab, but the thought of having to hear the intake at all times killed that idea really fast. It's a good concept, but most people (from what i get), want a snorkel that goes to the top of there rig, making it a water treding monster... if i am wrong, please, someone correct me...

I like the down turn at the top, I'm gonna show that image to my brother. FYI Samuri's run into the front air vent slots between the hood and windshield, works pretty good to keep water out of them. I think any deeper with a snorkle on you'll 1 flood the distributor, breathers on the trans, tcase, axles, and more than likely the engine unless you watertight seal and vent the breathers through the snorkle too.

....is that Kane Creek?

....and don't forget about the radiator fan, when they hit water they flex toward the radiator so you may want to set up an electric fan so when you ford water you can shut it off.
