which project is easier
« on: Oct 06, 2006, 08:25:09 AM »
Hey, I'm new to this and this question might be kinda weak. What would be easier, putting all my 81 4x4 runing gear into my 89 2wd excab. Or putting my 89 cab, fender, and so on, on my 81 frame? Also my 89 has a complete fabtech 12in longtravel lift on it, that i would have to scrap. So I'm leaning toward the second option.

uuuuhhhh, swap the running gear over...allows you to beef the spring hanger etc...longtravel kit = EBAY!  Help pay for the axle swap.  Use rear springs off 81 for front suspension on 89...plus 89 already has wider axle in it.  Newer frame and engine as well.

and keep your overall lift around 5 inches,  anything more and your just asking to be hangin from your seatbelts

i would swap the solid axle under the 89 for sure

all you will need is a W56  and tcase,  butyou can easily  find those

and you can use the ifs hubs on the front axle  in order to gain some added width

The '89 is a 2wd. You can not use the rearend or the hubs.

You asked what would be easier? Well it would be easier just to swap cabs , but it would probably be better to use the '89 frame. If you swap cabs you'll have to fab new cab mounts. If you use the '89 2wd frame you'll have to do a lot of fab work to fit the 4wd drivetrain in it. Also is your '81 a longbed or shortbed? If it's a shortbed it would look silly with an '89 xtra cab on that short frame.

Why do you hate to scrap the 2wd lift. You can't use it on a 4wd anyway? Definately sell it on e-bay to help finance your new project.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I think your'e right bluetoy it probably would be easier just to swap cabs. I don't mind it looking funny. If i sell my old lift it would probably have the frame go with it since it required welding to it. Do you all think the 89efi is that much beter than the 8122r?

No one is gonna wanna buy a frame like dat for the front suspension are they?  Craziness!

Sell the components.  Keep the EFI...

I think I'm just gonna sell the efi, even though it's rebiult with an LC cam, just to not mess with the wiring into the 81. Then just scrap out the 89. Maybe it's not the best way but I'm not good with electrical. What do you think I could get for the engine/wiring/header/computer? I'll put the money into the 81.

:headscratch:If your swapping the '89 cab onto the '81 frame you will not have to do any wiring. All the wiring will go with the cab and engine. The only thing you'll have to do is use the EFI gas tank and wiring for the fuel pump. Very easy .

I am begining to get the feeling that neither of these projects is in the scope of you current abilities.  Have you thought about selling both, or selling one and parting one and trying to find a more suitable running rig?

That is kinda what I was thinking. But if it were me I would sas the 2wd, find a 4wd wide rear end for it and build off of that. It is easier to do an sas on a 2wd rather than a 4wd because of alot less stuff to cut off plus the front of the frame has a higher arch to it more suitable for a low lift and crossover steering.

So you still want to swap the cabs? It would be alot easier to just sas the 2wd. I have done the cab swap thing once before and it was a time consuming pain in the ass. I would never do it again. :reg: The 2x4 frame i'm sure is in much better shape than the older toys frame. Just go the easy smart rout and build off the 2wd.
