Well it seems like my OEM Taco Power Steering pump on my 2000 3rz (in my 85 Toyota extra cab) is now starting to whine and growl. Not to mention the fact that it appears to be air-raiding the ATF Fluid.
The only mod I did to the pump was I drilled out the restrictor from .120" Dia to .188" Dia. And here is the post on how I did that.
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?p=5441843#post5441843Just for information sake, The hydro cylinder I'm using is a 1 1/2" bore x 6" stroke PSC (destroked to 4.25") to Sky's arms on my Toyota 8" front axle.
The noise is pretty bad at start up and it seems to calm down some when it gets warmed up. A new OEM pump will cost $175. But for that price - I can get a PSC pump (+ another $50 for a pulley). But I'm not sure about a brakcet.
Are any of you guys having problems like this?
How can I tell if the noise is from a bad pump or the fluid?
What is cause the fluid to be air-raided?
Should I try switching the fluid to synthetic?
Did drilling out the restrictor make it get noisey?
If I go get a Junk yard pump ($50) - will it have the same problems in the near future?
I'm just trying to figure out how to fix this with the least about of dollars......
