You know you've got a 3.0 when...
« on: Aug 05, 2006, 12:54:17 AM »
I was thinking about all the work I've done on my 3.0s, and decided to make this list.

1. you change your headgaskets more often than your oil

2. you cry when it is time to change your spark plugs.

3. a simple tuneup becomes a full day affair.

4. You discover that it is easier to swap engines than to change head gaskets

5. A conversation centered around "Whats that smell and or noise?" "Oh, nothing, it always does that"  is normal.

6. You don't find it strange at all to regularly have to pull over, let the truck cool down, and add water in a 40 mile trip

7. You've wheeled through the 'con with the hood off, to solve your overheating problem.

8. you get worried when that squealing sound stops.

9. you don't have to buy parts anymore, because you've stripped down at least 2 motors in the last year :smack:

10.  you still claim that it is a decent motor

11. the best 3.0 you've ever had leaks like a sieve, has an unknown number of miles, and seems to be held together by nothing more than spit, duct tape, zip ties, permatex, and blood

12. you discovered you were double jointed when changing your oil filter

13. 3.0 is a 4 letter word in your house

14. you've actually considered going back to a carburated 22r

Added 8/15/06

15. You can run all the vacuum lines right the first time without even glancing at a book

16. It seems the more leftover parts you have, the better it runs

17. Youryou've stumped the toyota advice guy at the local dealership with your questions

18. WTF? is used when something actually does make sense, it is so rare.

19. More people are sketchy about wheelin with you because of your motor, not your IFS

Added January 9th, 2007
You just set a new record for not working on your motor...2 weeks

Passing Smog the first time is like winning the lottery, the odds are miniscule.  (and I did, so there goes my chances of winning the lottery)

Goes with the one above, but... You're shocked when it passes smog.

Added 4/8/08

It takes you 1 1/2 hours to take out the thermostat!!

The Haynes and Chilton books say that you have to remove the fan, belts, and front timing cover to get to the thermostat! (you don't )

You know know for sure that Cursing loudly and proficiently at whatever you are working on does in fact make things come apart and go back together easier, it just takes several minutes ( or hours) to reach the proper escalation of tone.

That 4.3 swap dosent sound too bad anymore. At least if it runs hot it still has power and is easy to do plugs, head gaskets and oil filters.

Brilliant, simply brilliant!

BD you Rock! Lets go wheeling again soon, and see if we can blow a head gasket so you can get it out of the way and have another good year of wheeling.

I try and try and try to tell him what a big mistake he is making but he has 2 4Runners with 3.0's, one is an interior strip so he's gonna take the interior out of the other one which was a hard roll and put it in the other then he's got the engine in the rolled 4Runner and now he has my truck so he now want to put the 3.0 out of the rolled one in my old truck.

They are pretty wierd engines. My dads' 91 pickup has a 3.0 and the oil filter is in a retarded place. And it does take nearly all day for a tune up. I feel completely sorry for the people running stock trucks/4runner with 3.0 cus the the oil is a you know what to change. Luckily we've got a total chaos suspension. Makes everything a little easier. And that mysterious chirping noise down at idle. And did I mention gutless?!
