exhuast turbo for my 86 toyota?
« on: Jul 17, 2006, 10:30:35 AM »
I have a stock 22r in my 86 toyota. I picked up a exhuast manifold with a turbo on it, all in good shape. can i put it on without modifing anything on the motor or do I need to replace my heads or anything else to make it work?

If you are running a carburetor it will be a pain in the  :moon:

It all depends on what the setup came from too.

Fuel injection would be best for this, but if you have skills you could build a box to put around the carb and a high pressure fuel pump with a regulator.

I said it would be a pain didn't I?  :smack:

My dad use to have a 50's chevy pickup with a turbo 350! It was like a ray jay turbo and it had a box around the carb they would like open when not under boost, a lot of turbo lag but it would get on it! He said sometimes the wastegate would stick shut and boost would go througt the roof and when it happened all you could do was hold on and pray fo dear god. Is there a way to make a 22r a turbo and still reliabile and last a few miles? I say do the turbo 22r  It would be way cooler than a 22re becasue it OG and has a carb! Thats all :ha_ha: - nick

dont do it, 2 of my friends did it with stock 22res and they both had probs, the first one used a head gasket spacer, cranked up the afm and had issues with the oiling system and didnt have the water lines plumbed in, and cooker the turbo, and the bearings outta his motor, cuz it burned up all the oil outta the exhaust.
the second friend used a stock motor, and warped the :pokinit: outta his head, pushing way to much boost, i think he hit around 25 psi.

IF!!! you could get it to all work AND if you kept the boost to no more than 5 or 6 pounds the motor would probably do ok. But anymore than just a small amount of boost and like the other guys have said, you're gonna toast a motor.
22R's are great motors, but when it's all said and done, there's no substitute for cubic inches.

hey these guys are right..even though they made 22re with turbo these motor are really sensitive but they last a long time..but if you want to go with a turbo..go after market because the stock 22re ct20 turbo do not last long..i think they last for about 60k miles or less and thats not good..so go after market
