Front end noises
« on: Jul 17, 2006, 01:42:24 AM »
I have been helping my buddy build his 85 pickup for awhile now and he finally decided to add the all pro front lift springs and a high steer conversion. While adding these items we tore apart the front end and found the upper and lower bearings and races gone. So we rebuilt the entire front end including the hubs but minus the center section and after completing it we test drove it and found while turning either direction there is a popping/clunking noise. 4wd or 2wd results in the same nosie. I dont have much experience in toyota troubleshooting but could it be a bad birfield dmgd from the broken up bearings? All looked good when we cleaned it all up. Im wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem and could help out.

Thanks.

When you tested it in 2wd did you unlock the hubs.

If it made the noise in 2wd and the hubs UNLOCKED, that would eliminate the birfs, right?  Maybe you could lift the front end off the ground and see if there's any play in the wheel bearings or steering linkage?  Even if the wheel bearings were tightened the first time, after a few miles the grease in the bearings can conpress and the bearings can come a little bit loose again.
