5.29's with an automatic!!!
« on: Jul 13, 2006, 09:16:34 PM »
I was thinking on putting 5.29's in my 85 with an automatic trans with O.D.  I was wondering is anyone running different gears in their truck with an automatic.  I was planning on running 35's, and what you MPG?  How much will it affect my drive (RPMs, shifting, 4lo, ect.)?

                                Thanks, Justin

My 87 Runner 22Re with auto with 33x10.50 tires and 571 gears seems very happy running around town. I can be first from the light if I want. Seems very comfy at 65 on the highway....does 3300 rpm at 75 mph.  Gas mileage is around 19 in town.

Also, my 88 Runner with 3.0 with auto with 31 tires and 529 gears does just fine. Don't know about the gas mileage as it is missing real bad on 1 cylinder.

You can pretty much put as low a gear as you want in the diffs because the OD is .71 or there-abouts.

With 35" tires you might consider 571. And because of the cushioned torque loads of automatics I don't think you could break 571 gears even if they were put in poorly. :driving:

edit---the thinner the tire (10.50 vs 12.50) the faster the take-off and the better the mileage.

I am running 5.29's and 37" MTR's with the automatic on my 87. The truck is actually pretty quick. When I bought it it had 38.5" SX's. I only sold them because I got tired of getting pulled over for my wheels sticking out so far on the 2" BS wheels.
