Pilot bearing
« on: Jun 25, 2006, 06:30:43 PM »
Anybody have some tips getting the pilot bearing out? I don't have the tool the service manual shows. but I do have a grease gun. I was hoping for a n easier and/or cleaner way. It is for a 22re with a manual tranny. Thanks

you dont have to buy the tool, you can borrow it from pepboys, kragens, autozone......

the "packing grease behind the pilot bearing trick" worked for me.  If you wrap the metal object you are going to use with electrical tape you can get a very tight seal.

If the outter race is all that is left and you have access to a MIG or stick welder, you can carefully weld a bead around the inside of the race. When it cools it will shrink and fall out.

So long as you don't weld it to the crankshaft  :_oops:

Yea, I just put in a W56 and used the grease trick with one of the 19mm bellhouseing bolts.  Worked slicker'n scum off a loosianna swamp!

i tried to remove mine, wouldnt come out, i tried puttign grease in, nothing.....  eventually i broke out the innards with a screwdriver... well was stuck with jsut the outer race stuck i nthere, tried heat, didnt work, tried all sorts of stuff with no luck.... finally what i tried, was forcing a socket into the race, then with a ratchet just started cranking on the socket, eventually it broke free, slowly i would crank and pull on it, eventually it came out....
