motor sputter

 :help:
 i have a 1987 toyota 4 runner with a slightly modified 22re
(bored, cam ,k&n air filter(air box style) header, muffler)
the problem im having is it hesitates(right in my cruse range) between 2,000 & 3000 rpm, but once it reaches around 3100 rpm it jumps right out of it and runs like a top above 3000,  i drive down a moderatly steep hill every day and once i get to the bottom it sputters in that same rpm range in 1st and 2nd gear, then after playing with the skinny peddel a little it pops right out
the truck revs up jus fine out of gear, it smells a little lean. ive tried testing the following parts, : coil/igniter,afm, and im gunna try a different distributer today, it dose have a header leak right above the o2 sensor might that have anything to do with it?         any info could help

Curious what lean smells like? Have you tried richening the air metering valve settings at all?

if there is a rip in your intake boot, that will do it even if its really small

it happened to me, and it was just a little 1inch rip in the boot.

you may have a funky TPS with a bad spot or a funky AFM with a bad spot or the door is not moving freely.     Like Knute said, take a good look at the intake tube and rubbers.  The curved one at the throttle body cracks down between the pleats.  Mine has a crack, I put a RTV silicon band-aid on it till I find a good one.

EDIT: sorry to drag an ancient thread to the top   :hammerhead:
