Smog Law's
« on: Apr 09, 2006, 11:50:45 AM »
I'm trying to find out what all I need to do to get my 83 Toy truck to pass smog with a 91 Chevy 4.3 V6 engine in it. Does anyone know what headers you can put on and still be able to pass smog? My donor blazer came from Oregon so I'm not sure what all I need to change for it to be smoged in California. I know I need to go to a referee but I don't want to have to go back 20 times before I get it right. I'm just about done rebuilding my engine and I'm ready to buy headers, I was thinking either Hooker Headers or Headman Headers but not sure if they will be smog legal. If you can help that would be great.

Check the CA Air Resource Board web-site.(CARB)  They have lists of what is legal and not by mfr/pn.

I used Astrovan Tubular type stocker and cut and turned them to fit inside my frame rails.  a bit of work but it's legal.
Some idiots are too busy knowing it all, to ever learn anything...

DynoMax headers from NAPA has CARB Legal headers.  I would assume Thorley would have a legal verion as well.

As far as headers go, they have to be stamped with a CARB# for Cali. It's kinda funny too, those #'s must be expensive cause it sure jacks the price of things up.
Same goes for intakes...must have CARB#.
Then you have to smog it to what ever the the motor, in this case, would have had to pass for it's year. (91) Cat, charcoal canister, EGR, etc.

not positive on obd1's but I do know that you cannot put an out of state obdII(96-on) motor in a cali truck.

probably the same on all conversions

damn, I didn't know about some of this stuff. I decided to run the stock exhaust manefolds. I really want my truck to be street legal, I'm thought I was going to be able to. What I was going to do was make sure that I had all to California smog on the engine then see if it would pass smog.
