Removing Window Tint?
« on: Apr 02, 2006, 05:31:58 PM »
My truck came with some :gay: blue/purple tint, and in addition to looking stupid, makes it a pain to see out of my windows, especially in the slightest bit of low light. So far we've gotten some off with a razor blade, but it's pretty time consuming where it stuck well. Is there anything I can do to kind of loosen it up before I start peeling?

You might try going over it with a hairdryer to heat it up a little, then hit it with the razor blade.Other than that there's not much you can do.

I would say a heat gun on low or hairdryer as well.  :twocents:

Yup, I also have some GARBAGE purple window tint on my back sliding window and my side triangle vent windows. I have pealed most of it off by hand but the rest is on for life.

We have a heat gun and I figured I would try that when I got around to it. Let me know how the heat gun approach works so I can get encouraged to remove mine :gap:

Never tried the heat gun, but i've always used warm soapy water in a spray bottle. Spray it on an edge and work it up with a razor blade. Then once you get it started, you just spray and peel. This might take a little more time than the heat gun, but, if you don't have a heat gun it's an alternative.
After the film is off you soap it up liberally and scrape off the excess glue with the razor.

I had to remove window tint once (by force stupid CHP) from my front door windows, man it makes my fingers hurt just thinking about it.  I don't think the heat gun will work since it's not that type of adhesive, the water method does work to some degree but that glue is only coming off with a blade. I used the water bottle and a razor to get it all off. The water helps the razor slide over the glass.

I'm just going to hit the glue with some lacquer thinner. My dad used a little brake cleaner and it dissolved some, but the thinner would work quicker.

Ya know, now that I think about it, the heat gun might actually just make the adhesive stickier.  A heat gun does work great like I said for the stupid factory stripes.  I think you're on the right track with a razor blade and some type of adhesive dissolver.  I have used some labeled "adhesive dissolver" that did not work so hot.  Brake cleaner seems like a good choice.  Could it damage the window seals though?   :twocents:

give some goof off a shot, its a very strong "remover" we used to use it to get labels and stickers off shelves at thehardware store where I worked :dunno:

YOu could also try some )) steel wool, with the soapy water technique.  I've seen it used before, but that was on tint that was starting to bubble

You really don't need to get carried away with a bunch of chemicals and abrasives. The glue is water soluble. Warm soapy water works without worrying about screwing something else up. Really! I too have had to play the CHP game with my side windows.
If you start at the top the water will kind of puddle at the point where the film meets the glass, this helps break down the glue. You just keep spraying and pulling. Use the blade for the tough spots.

If you don't have laquer thinner your sisters nail polish remover will work just as well.  Smells funky too!  :gap:

It's all gone but the glue now, #11 Xacto blade works soo well. Mike, just slide a razor blade or xacto blade level with the glass under the tint, it cuts right under it and it peels off easy.

If it's not too late...use Ammonia (the soapy kind) and water. Spray the film, then let it sit outside with the windows up for a while. An installer told me this.

That surprises me. I struggled for a while with a heatgun.  You'd think with all the technical info on this site we could figure out how to get some silly stickers off our trucks. Sheesh!

Yeah, we didn't do it on purpose, they just slowly started flaking away more and more each time we took it to the car wash.  Maybe it's something about central PA mud that just eats it??  LOL.  But yep, eventually they were almost gone and so we kept taking it to the car wash and actually putting effort into trying to get it to flake off and sooner or later they were all gone.
