Smog And moving Out of State- QUESTIONS
« on: Feb 28, 2006, 09:01:05 PM »
I plan on moving from California to Idaho sometime this year and i have a question about smog.....

If i bought a vehicle here in california that will not pass CA emission testing, Would i have any trouble taking it to another state that doesn't smog and be able to register it? If anyone knows, or could post a link that has some info, i'd appreciate it.

Thanks

No, shouldn't be an issue in a state that doesn't require to pass emissions

Wow, that was a fast response. Anyone disagree? I dont know if these trucks belong to anyone on this site, but I seen a super clean black 4runner on craigslist that wont pass smog. And a red pickup that has 4.3 chevy conversion that was pretty awesome that needed smog also.

If you really think about it why would a state that doesn't require you to pass a test, care if you failed one in another state. As long as you have clear title to the truck, just walk in to the nearest DMV in that state and request to register it. Even in Cali if it is exempt it doesn't matter how bad it would test it still would get registered.

What if the vehicle doesnt have current registration, because it didnt pass emissions in CA? If you brought it to a "no smog" state, would that be nullified and registration would be granted...Assuming all fees are paid?

Other states don't really give a damn about CA's smog program, some areas within a state require emissions testing, but that's only an issue if you live in or near a major city for the most part. Rural areas like where I live (Washington) there isn't testing, thats how the guy down the road can license and now put up for sale his 81 yota with a 351W problem free.

It makes sense. My dad's '86 pickup wont pass smog, so he registered it at our aunt's house up in the foothills where no smog is required, so he can now get it registered and live here in the valley.

lol, sure BlackDog. Im kinda winging it myself. I plan on saving a little money, taking off one day and i'll probably stay with some extended family till i get on my feet up there. They live in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. I visited them a couple years ago, and it was awesome. The snow is a small price to pay for the beauty and luxury of living a walk away from fishing, hunting and mud....Of course, no smog is a great benefit.

Are these somebodies trucks:

http://sacramento.craigslist.org/car/137838769.html
http://sacramento.craigslist.org/car/137565266.html

I'd like to roll one of these up to Idaho. Im selling my truck this week, but i wont be ready to leave for a little bit, and probably wont be able to buy one and leave fast enough to drive it up registered. Maybe an extension at DMV would work?

Sure thing. Im only going to Idaho, because i have some kind of family there and its better than CA. Im young and have no ties here, so i might as well see if i can make something happen in a city that caters to my interests, speed and style of living.

go for  it! if you don't do it now when you can, some day you will look back and wonder what would have happened if you just did it.
When I was in my mid 20's I moved from NJ to San Fran with just a few $100 to my name. Had a great 3 years there, best memories ever, then long story short, moved to FL, met MrW and even better memories have been and are still being made.
If I had never gone to SF in the first place i would not be here now.
