Yeah, the key needs to be on. If you have no check engine light check the EFI fuse and check for power at the EFI fuse. Theres something up there. No check engine light leads me to beleive no power turning on the PCM. MIke
1986 toyota pickup 4x4 sr5, 5spd, 22-re unknown mileage. The truck wont start. I have tried many things and at one point it was starting and running for about 5 secs then dieing, then i tried this fuel pump check thing ( http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/index.shtml#FuelPump scroll down to the fuel pump tricks) and i think i screwed it up worse ( now that i looked at the site again i think i may have jumped the wrong connector and fried something, but i dont know what) because now it wont start at all, still turns over but wont start, and the fuel pump wont turn on. I know the pump is still good though because i hooked a wire to it from the battery so i could bypass everything and see if it was still good, and it is. PLEASE HELP ME
if i was u i would check all the fuel lines and spark make sure the fuel line into the carb or ur fuel injectors is spraying fuel before u do anything because u definetly have a spark or fuel problem if that doesnt work check ignition coil and distributor. Most importantly though check the fuel pump first u can check it by having someone turn the key to the on position and listening by the gas tank to see if u hear it come on and what i also like to do is start from the fuel lines around the gas tank disconnect them and crank the engine to see if it squirts.
ttry swaping ecus with you'r turbo. just make sure all you'r jumper wires are removed.
Check or swap the fuel pump relay behind the ECU and also you might want to check the bulb of the check egine light maybe it is shot thats why it is not on. Happen to my runner once and I had the same situation.
The computer that runs the fuel injectors. If theres no power there you wont get injector pulse or power at the fuel pump
