Question on Gears.
« on: Sep 01, 2003, 08:42:23 PM »
:help:I have this 85 Toy 4x4 that I bought about a year ago just got it running.  I know the owner previous to the guy I bought it from set it up for wheeling.  I drove it today and I noticed as I go through the gears it takes alot longer to pick up speed than other Toys I had could this be an indication that the gears have been changed????????????????????????

well if he had put lower gears in it, it would get up faster.  But that realy don't  mean anything about the gears. the motor could be tired.

well if he had put lower gears in it, it would get up faster.

It might accelerate faster, but the velocity will be slower.

Try to do this:
Put it in 4th gear and cruise at 50MPH, 60MPH, and then 70MPH and record the RPM at those three speeds in 4th gear.

Then hopefully someone else is reading this and will do the same in their truck and will be able to do the same so you can compare RPM numbers with the vehicle's actual speed.

BigMike

it should be around 3500 rpm at 60 mph, that's the case for my v6 but we calculate in kmh around here.

20/22R engines should run at 3100 rpm@ 55mph, stock.  www.tlca.org has a rpm chart that you can use to determine any of the variables.  Input tire size, rpm, mph and get gear ratio.  Substitute as needed for any unknown and Viola!  Free answers.

The motor definently isn't tired it has only about 3000 on it since the rebuild.  Where I would shift in my old toy with the stock gears, I can shift now but my mph is about 10-15 less at that point.

Well with stock gears it take longer to go though the gears than with "lower" gears. With "lower" gears you will shift faster though the gears butt will be going slower.

if you have 35's...everone says to get 5.29's, but 4.10's or 4.11's run at higher speeds, and still provide plenty of torque.
It just won't get stuck!!
