Taco tranny, which way to go?
« on: Aug 30, 2003, 11:26:45 AM »
Background:
- 99 Tacoma xtra cab 3.4L engine with R150 tranny/tcase
- clutch is about due to be replaced (ie tranny removed)

My intention is to go with a crawler box(ie gear driven tcase).

Which is the better route to go, keep the stock tranny(R150) by using an adapter or get a turbo tranny(R151)?

From my understanding, I'll need a 23 spline tcase to use an adapter to the r150.

From my understanding, the r151 will bolt up to the 3.4L... may need a 3.0L bellhousing.

For the sake of argument, lets assume the following is true for both trannies:
- both will need the 23 spline tcase
- both will need driveline modifications

If I could get the turbo tranny(R151) for around the cost of the adapter(r150 to gear drive tcase), would the R151 be the best route to take?

Any input would be appreciated,
John
