Installing ARB Snorkel on an 87 4runner
« on: Jan 20, 2006, 03:35:01 PM »
I am looking to install a snorkel on my husband 87 4runner, I went to a 4 wheel parts store and they said that it need some modifications under the hood.  I was wondering if anyone had an 87 and has put ARB Snorkel on, and if you have any advice that would help me out????

I don't think the install is a big issue, the underhood mods shouldn't mess with any important functions. They may just have to move a few things around. Then it's just drilling the holes and mounting. I've never had work done by 4wph's but have heard some bad stuff so maybe you may want to just buy the snorkle and give it to him in the box and let him worry with the install. Or find an independent 4x4 shop, your  local mechanic shop or even a body-shop since all of the work involved is non-mechanical work.

I agree with Rock surfer.  :psss: Save yourself some cash and just let him install it.  If he likes to build toys it should be a fun learning experience.  The only things that have to be done are cutting a hole in the fender and mounting mass 02 sensor on snorkel.

Thanks I think that I will just let him install it himself, he likes to mess around with his truck anyway.

i saw stacey on trucks put one on a jeep, the only under the hood mods to do are to cut a hole in the stock air filter box and put the snorkel into it, and youl also have to cut a hole in the side of the fender.

i think it is an incomplete kit.you'll need a rubber intake hose to go from the snorkel to the air box.i think one off a mazda (ford) B2200 works.

I know what the kits have but ARB doesn't make snorkels for the fuel injected trucks just the ones with carburetors.  I just wanted to see if anyone have installed one before.  I wanted to have it installed as a surprise, but I have to let him do it by himself.  Thanks for all your help.   :turtle:

A friend of mine has a snorkle on his 85 EFI 4Runner, I've never asked him about the install guess I'll give him a call this week and find out what was done to make it work.

The only bad thing is he is not a do-it-yourself kinda guy so I know he did not do the install, but he generally wants to know everything that is done to his truck I'll pick his mind, what's left of it. I should call him anyways the last I talked with him I was moving to AZ. and he thinks I'm already gone. He was all bummed when it comes to spotting him he only trusts 2 people on the trail, myself and my brother.

My husband is the do it yourself guy, but I would like for it to already be installed.  I am in the San Diego area and I can't find anyone around here that is willing to install it since it's not made exactly for his car.  I talked to Yota Masters they said they would but they are about an hour away.   I have a hard time driving my husbands truck in the first place so I don't know if I will be able to drive it all the way up there.  If you could ask him what kind of modifications they had to do that would be great.  Thank you.

:rofl2: I just tryed calling him and his message machine picked up, he can't even set up his manager. Still is the computer generated voice.  :shake_head:

I'll try again later, maybe I should just talk to his wife. She'd probably know more anyways.

Thanks that will be really helpful.  His truck looks good with the snorkel on.  I just went and picked up my husbands snorkel today, i am excited for him to come home and see it hopefully installed.  if not he can try and do it by himself.  I really appreciate this, its not to often I can tear him away from his truck or as I like to call it his mistress.  But thats alright.

Here's the info and where he got it done at, there good and bad news, it was done by Man-A-Fre Off-road Performance. Unfortunatly they are in Simi Valley. Now for the good news, it is really simple to fab it up, all they did was run an FJ-60 heater vent hose from the snorkel inside the fender to the EFI inlet, that's it.

Here is their # so you can call them and see if they remember doing this, he had it done in 2000, 805-578-8712 and they have a website too:

http://www.man-a-fre.com/default.htm

They're a Land-Cruiser specialty shop so they may remember a 4Runner even that long ago.

Man, if I was there I'd be glad to help.  It would be hard to do from Albuquerque tho...

As others have said, it's possible and not too difficult; any good 4x4 shop will be able to make it happen for you.

Post up some pictures when it gets done!
