You guessed it, yet another 85 4 Runner buildup!
« on: Dec 19, 2005, 11:32:24 PM »
It's time to post another 85 4 Runner build up thread.  :king:   I bought my Toy from the original owner last spring (I have the original window sticker, and a pile of paperwork from 20 years of oil changes.)  :)  Over the past few months, I have been stock piling parts from the various vendors to begin the build. I am a pencil pusher by day, so I will give 99% of the credit to my friend Wayne who is helping me do it right.  So here we go, on with the pictures :beerchug:

Day one last spring with my twin boys climbing on their new rig:

They really like posing. So here they are on the old Sami:

They are actually quite 4X4 savvy. At a recent rock crawling event in Cougar Buttes, the boys complained that the 4 Runner needed lockers. :hahaha: The first mod was the addition of an All-Pro rear bumper.

On the lift at Wayne's backyard shop:

Dual Ultimates going in first that I bought from 4DEES.  The one problem we had was converting the remote/forward shift back to an EFI top shift. A little research and a call to Marlin and Wayne figured it out.

Check out the clean placement of the rear shifter and the shinny original vinyl that I discovered under the carpet.

Suspension time. 8) I ordered the 4" trail flex kit from Marlin and picked up an IFS steering box from Troy at Cal Mini. Front springs in place and prep work for the box is done.

More pictures to come!

Understand this! Hear me loud and clear! There can never be too many 85 4Runner Buildups!  Power to the YOTA!   :rara: :respekt: :muscles: :best: :booya: :rockingout: :woohoo:
IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

I think they are "el cheepo" seat covers from Auto Zone. :gap:

BOB it!!!
I thought it was a requirement that you need to bash it before you can bob it.  :ack:  A bob is in the future, but the truck is so clean, I just can't do it quite yet. :)

Those covers are alive, They look good in the pic but I have heard em say ouch if I throw a tool on em too hard. Oh I fixed the pasenger seat so it goes forward now.

I am learning alot from you guys, this is my first toyota build so I will be picking for any info you can give.

And Jim gets 100% credit cause it is his card that keeps all these cool parts showwing up at the shop.

Thanks
Wayne

Wait till I get him to the hammers. He will BOB it just to fix the dents.

Thanks

Too late. :_order:  We did a lot of work last night, including the rear springs. :flamer:  My Sami was linked front and rear and almost too flexy at times so we are going conservative for now.

I forgot to bring my camera last night but Wayne snapped a few pics of the progress. I'll try and post them (or maybe he will) soon. I might be (if everything works out perfect) wheeling it in Johnson Valley by mid January or maybe some snow in Big Bear!!!! :crossed:

If the cable is broken then your best bet is to get a new one. But I have used cable locks from a bike store or sometimes you can find them at Autozone, to fix a cable that is broken right at the end ball. What happens over the years is that the stamped steel arm that actuates the release mechanism via the y cable gets bent and wont pull far enough to let the seat slide. You can just bend it back but it will not hold long. what I did was bend it back and welded in a brace to keep it from bending again. 15 min fix tops if you reach under the seat with pliers and move the latches by hand you can slide the seat far enough forward to get the rear bolts out. then it is easy to figure out on the bench.

Hope this helps
Wayne

FYI: We ended up moving this spring hanger another 1" 1/2 forward in order to center the axle in the rear.  :turtle:

This is the cleanest 85 runner you will find, and yes some things suck in so cal but lots of things don't. I think I will stay.
