4.3 Chevy Swap in 83 Toy
« on: Dec 14, 2005, 08:11:03 PM »
Hey guys, I'm new to the board. I've been lurking around here for a bit and thought I'd go ahead and sign on.
Anyway, my question has to do with dropping a 4.3 Chevy TBI in to an 83 Toyota that I'm starting to build. Now I know it can be done but all the info that I've been able to find concerning this swap deals with motors that have the serpentine belt setup. The motor that I have came out of a UPS truck that my ex-brother-n-law gave me. It's supposed to be an 89 engine but it has a normal V-belt configuration. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience in putting this configuration of engine in to a Toy pickup. I was wanting to run the mechanical fan but I'm a little concerned about clearance in the front. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My 4.3 fit with a serpentine belt which has a longer water pump from what I have been told '(85runner) so it should be no problem.  You might have to run a flex fan instead of a clutch fan.  The hardest part is being patient with the wiring.  I don't think your 83 can be that much shorter in the engine bay.  Oh yeah I didn't move my tranny location or do a body lift but did a bit of pounding.

Hey thanks for the input. I was kind of curious about if this engine would work. Of course, I guess if I end up not having enough clearance then I can always convert it to a serpentine setup. Of course, it's probably going to be a little while before I'm ready to drop the engine in. I'm trying to get the rest of the truck ready first.

I'm always looking for more info. I was really hoping to find someone who has done a 4.3 swap with this kind of v-belt configuration. I've found quite a few pages with good info, just not exactly what I was looking for. I'll go ahead and give you the links I have.
