1984 tranny question/upgrade
« on: Dec 07, 2005, 09:45:39 AM »
Hello,
I just bought an 84 extended cab w/22R and 5 speed for my wife, but it will most likely go to my son in a couple years. When he gets the truck it will get larger tires (it has 31s now) and a lift kit. The best I can tell, the 5 speed is a G52.

The tranny makes a lot of noise in 3rd, 4th and 5th. Sounds like bearings.

I plan on buying a Marlin rebuilt tranny and see that they upgrade the G52 to a G54.

My question is: Is there another BOLT IN tranny option that would be better/stronger than the G52/G54?

Thanks for your time
89 Ext. Cab, 22re 5 speed, 31"10.50/15"

W56, but you have to either get a top shift t-case for an early W56, or a top shift or late style forward shift case('89-95 w56).  your early forward shift case's shift rods are too long to work.

I'm looking at doing the same thing.i have a 84 extra cab and want to put in a w56d trans and t case .i have read every thing i can find
but i have two questions.
1 will my speed-o work on that trans or is it set up for the electronic one .
2 are the shifters in the same place as the forward shift g trans.
thanks for any help or links

Thank you for the replies.

With the W56 and t/case, will my 84 drivelines and crossmember still work?
