Anyone ever see a Hilux axle in front of a taco?
« on: Jul 19, 2003, 03:53:23 PM »
I have a 84 4runner and the cancer has gotten bad, not to mention it has 260k on the 22r. I foolishly spent tons of money on the front end with in the last year. cromoly shafts, hysyteer, custom shock hoops, warn hubs. never got to the diff or gears ( i guess the bug bit me) I saw the adapter that moves the transfercase on the right side of the taco. Has anyone put a hilux axle into the front of a taco? or has anyone seen write up on it?
thanks
mike

You would just need to run some wheel spaces to match the width.

I have not seen a taco with a hilux front end as of yet, but that's just me. Im sure many people have done it already.

All you need to do, rather the taco is 4cyl or V6, is just run our one adapter, V6T-4CXL, which converts the t/case to a gear driven, and then just stick with the gear drive t/case since its right hand drive anyways. You could go dual, or triple cases and run some 4.70s or what ever -- the skys the limit there.

BigMike

thanks big mike, i was just worried about things like exhuast and other dodads. I just thought it was wierd that there is a million SAS on 86-95 but why stop the fun there? i think the 2.7 is a cool engine, i am just too lazy to fix my rust and put it into my 4runner.(rather smarter then invest more money into that pit)

Yeah the two concerns would be 1) the rack and pinion steering and 2) the exhaust, but if your chopping out the IFS then theres no more r'n'p steering, and Im sure the exhaust could be rerouted to clear a drive line?
Could possibly be some transfercase to underbody interference, but that occurs on some 84-95 models when dualcases are installed, so that shouldnt be a problem, if any.

Maybe their is something more serious that we are overlooking? I dont know why I haven't seen any either. I dont have a taco though so I cant verify many problems...

Good luck and keep us informed

i was hopeing the steering wouldnt be such a hassel because everyone seems to do fine with the D44 swap. But besides exhaust and as you mentioned the transfercase clearance I cant think of anything else. Anyone know of any other things to look for?

One thing I just thought about is if there is enough room to mount an 86-95 powersteering box for a crossover steering (hysteer) system. Hopefully the raidator or and oil coolers are not in the way. Check the front portions of the drivers side frame rail at the base of the radiator support area.

http://www.bentup.com/sas.htm  They seem to use the IFS box. so I think thats out of the way. I probably wouldnt be looking to buy a taco untill the end of winter anyways. This is just me trying to figure out if I should start parting my 84. Or  haveing a buddy install a extra cab and make me a flat bed and install a 22re. Or my thrid choice is to sell the 84 take a huge loss and try to get 1500 for a truck I have close to 5-6 grand invested. Then get a taco and have someone help me with a D44 swap. I donno seems like I have to some pros and cons to wiegh :dunno:

I know your love either the 3.4 or the 2.7 much more than a 22R-E!

Dont limit your self to the 86-95 box, if it doesnt fit try using a forward facing box, I think LCs use this box IE FJ60,62,80

I think that trying to get that swap done is just a big expensive headache. I think I am just going to shoot for a 2.7 swap for my 84. Its not having the ugly duck rig when you go to get gas. Especially, when your friends overly paid for stock wrangler gets all the chicks.  :smack:
But anyhow, has anyone done this swap or know anyone who has? I thought I heard that the taco bellhouseing bolts to my tranny. Now where does that leave the clutch? I also heard the moter mounts are the same. :crossed: thanks for the help. I think if there isnt any major problems, I have finally made up my mind.  And i know about the lil exhaust issue ;)

hey man just curious??
if u already have a toy, why do you want to take a loss and then get a taco? you'll end up spending way more money on the taco, old toys you can find tons of parts for.anyways.
I have a taco sas'd right now and i read that you can use a grand cherokee box as well and is better cause instead of being on the outside of the frame it would go in the inside so it'll be more protected.
later.
95.5 taco.
