3RZ Swap - need help
« on: Nov 25, 2005, 05:40:59 PM »
I have a 1997 3RZ-FE out of a 2X4 4Runner and I'm working on switching the oil pan set-up over to the 2wd T-100 set-up and hit a major road block. I used Toyhatsu's part #'s on BigMike's Big Project thread page 6 and things aren't even coming close to matching up. I pulled off the stock front sump oil pan and pick-up tube and when I went to fit my new parts, nothing lined up. The oil pan (P/N 12101-65030) bolt holes do not line up and the pan is almost an inch too short for the block. The pick-up tube (P/N 15104-62060) sits at a 45 degree angle where it meets up with the pump so it won't screw into the block at all. Any help from Toyhatsu or BigMike or anyone else who's done this swap or working on it would be greatly appriciated.

Sorry no pictures, I'm stuck with dial-up internet.

Thanks,
B_ripper8

If I remember correctly, Toyhatsu's part numbers were for a 3.4 v6.  I know this from experience, cause i ordered the same part #s when doing my conversion.  Just go into the the Toyota parts dept and tell them to order a oil pan for a 4 cylinder T100 with the pick up tube, dipstick, dipstick tube, aluminum plug to block off the old dipstick entrance on the front of the timing cover, and the plug to cover the hole that will be in the side of the oil pan.  I think that hole is there for a oil level float on some models.  Remember with this setup, the dipstick will be located under the intake side down on the block.  You will need to punch out the plug that is in your block right now.

P.S. Here is a helpfull hint:  When tapping in the aluminum plug into the front of the timing cover to block off your old dipstick entrance, freeze it first.  This will help it from mushrooming while tapping it in.  Don't forget to use a brass punch too.

Thanks BUDDERS for the reply. I don't know why Toyhatsu's part #'s were for the 3.4L when he was doing the 3RZ swap himself, set me back 2 weeks which kind of sucks. Oh well, my fault for not checking. I am also trying to figure out where the hell the dip stick guide tube lines up. Looks like the middle of the intake plenum but it's still kind of confusing. Any tips there? Thanks again.

Take a peak at the intake side of the engine.  There should be a hole with a plug in it on the block facing downwards (probably has paint on it).  It's on the flywheel side of the motor mount area a few inches up from the bottom of the block.  Your new dipstick tube will bend forward and attach to the motor mount and end up by your power steering pump.

Are you doing your motor mounts like Big Mike did?

I do remember that at first, Toyhatsu had the wrong part numbers, and that he could not even get the correct ones, but then he got them, and I thought he went back and modified his posts to match the correct P/Ns..

I know that Dean (4THEWKN) has the correct #s, so I will get him to post them up-

Thanks for the help, I should be able to get the guide tube and union installed pretty easy. As for the engine mounts, I need to get that oil pan on so I can see how everything sizes up. I've got more lift than BigMike and my steering stabilizer is in a higher spot so I'll have to see where it sits.

I'd really appriciate those part #'s (Oil pan, pick-up tube, pick-up tube gasket, guide tube, and dip stick) becasue the parts lady at the Toyota dealership here didn't even know what an oil pan was. Very frustrating, seeing as I'm trying to get this done by Christmas.

Also, curious which fuse boxes everyone kept for this. My 4runner was origionaly EFI and I've removed most of the wires and circuits I didn't need. Pain in the ass because it was SR5.

Thanks,
Bobby
