How hard is a Tranny rebuild?
« on: Oct 18, 2005, 07:03:09 PM »
Folks,

some of my syncros are letting go ... esp. now that its cold I am double clutching  alot ...  I was wondering how hard it is to rebuild a tranny (R150)? Are there any special tools required? Except a press maybe?

Are there any tricky adjustments or alignments to make? Like setting up crank bearings and such?

Or are we jus tlooking at an easy operation?

:) Matt

I've been a heavy equipment mechanic for 20 years so a manual transmission is simple to me. Depending on a lot of things, it may be easy for you too, or maybe not.

There is no black magic in a manual gear box, but there are a suprising number of small pieces. The best advise I can give you is to get a good (I perfer factory) service manual and read through rebuilding your transmission. You will know what tools you will need and you will get a feel for your ability to tackle the job.

If you don't already have a GOOD service manual (not the generic auto parts store type), you should get one anyway. They are a life saver sometimes. I got a factory Toyota manual for my 1980 on E-Bay for $7.50 including shipping. I got a factory Toyota manual for my boy's Tacoma for $20 on E-Bay. I know the factory manuals are a hundred dollars or better in most cases, but I would pay the full price if I had to. I really think they are worth it.

Where are you located?

I am in Canada, BC ... shipping the tranny to marlin is cost prohibitive (as most tings are) ...

I have done pretty much everything except motor and trans rebuild .. Couldnt find any good info on tranny rebuild on the web so its either so easy you dont need instructions or so hard it should be left to the pro ..

I have an R150 that needs a home sitting on my garage floor. Too bad you are in Canada. Shipping is indeed prohibitive.

I'll make another plug for getting a service manual. I really think they are worth having and it will answer almost all the questions you have about this project.

Tom,

thanks for the offer on that R150 ... shipping will kill it ..
Found that good article on tranny rebuild ... of course mentions marlin in there

http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/r151f/

In the end cost for all the little tools and bits needed may be very similar to paying for the rebuild ...

Nut lets see how much boredom winter brings ..

go to the general 4wd discusion and look in the tech section there are some factory sevice manuals posted in there. If you look at that they will give you an idea if how to do a rebuild.

Where are you? What would you want for your R150?
