SAS on the cheap
« on: Oct 05, 2005, 01:57:46 PM »
OK ive saved some money and got an 85 front axle. The axle needs new seals/bearings and :pokinit: but I am looking to get my SAS parts soon.

I know its not good to always go cheap but im a poor son of a gun college student and part time mechanic.

Cant I use my rear springs up front? How much lift will i get with this?
Cant I get some Chevy rears from a buddy and run those? Stock chevys or lifted, what do I want?
I need a level rig will this work out? I need shackles though still right?

Im looking to SAS for as little money as possibile. Any tips appreciated. If I can do it cheap, I can do it now  :)

thanks

stock 2wd chevy rears got me 4" of lift.  You can make your own shackels for cheap, but check out WT's thread, it'll help

OK i was able to dig up some info

Waggy front springs give 3.5-3.75" lift, Chevy 63" 1988-1998 rears 2-3" lift.

Is this more of a cheap trick for a factory solid axle, or do people do this with SAS also?

people do it with solid axles too.  i think the best front spring setup is a waggy pack using a toyota rear main spring, because the spring pin moves the front axle 2" forward but the waggy pack was under a heavy ass vehicle so it is strong and is a good foundation under a toyota rear main spring.  rears go with something like a bronco II or chevies or something.  whatever you do, inboard em with jonny joints.  who says you cant get a leaf spring to flex like a coil?
in the projects nooga, anything goes

if you are talking about white_trash 's page, its a whole buildup, im sure there is more than $300 total in it, and its not really and actual parts list of an SAS if thats what your looking for....  http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=2547.0

basically, for an SAS you just need to start aquiring parts

Yes go with the 63" chevys in the rear, make shackles for rear, buy 2" lift shackles for the front from a solid axle toy, make 2" drop hanger, mix in 3 extra leaves with 3 stock rear leaves.  Make 2" drop hanger, ford shock towers, 14" procomp shocks, marlin forged high steer, brake lines, thats about it.  Look at my build cause that is exactly what I run except I also have 2.5" blocks out back and on my new truck I went with differnt shock towers
