Supercharger Questions
« on: Sep 06, 2005, 08:37:49 PM »
I scored me a free supercharger for my project 4Runner Rockcrawler (http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=14334.0)
I've got some questons about it.  I've found a couple of posts on pirate about these K&F superchargers.  Anybody have any experience with this charger?  I'm not looking to get record high HP numbers, just a couple extra ponies to get up and over some of the 10,000 foot passes here in CO while I drive to the trail.  I figured for being free that it would be worth a try to hook it up and try it out.  I'm thinking of running propane as well and I'm guessing the standard 22R kit Cary at gotpropane.com has probably won't fit this application.  Also, does it look like I'm missing anything important except for the belt  :smack: ?

Anyways, here's some pictures.  Any help would be great.

Wow, SC Carb'd.. At least it's below the carb so you don't have to worry about fuel pressure issues.

Without a real O2 sensor and knock sensor, just becareful and check your spark plugs regularly. Detonation is a fast killer on boosted engines, believe me, sadly, I have learned this from experience.

You can always buy the Camden (sold by LC Engineering):

I don't know much at all about the KF setup - I provided you the reference on the KF on pirate in regard to who makes it.
Adapting propane shouldn't be a big deal on that setup, it's already setup for a weber.

I hear the stock 22r will knock at 6psi on pump gas.  Propane should allow more boost.
My motor is low compression though...

Also - those positive displacement blowers aren't good for top end HP - great for torque though.. They're not terribly efficient.

Thanks for the replies.  I probably won't buy an SC for the 22R but since the price was right aka free ( ) I figured I would try it out.  I know that it won't make a ton of HP.  I'm just looking to turn some big tires on the highway at a decent speed (2nd gear and 20 mph up some of the passes sucks  ).  I have read quite a bit of stuff you have posted on pirate about SC's, thanks dcg9381!

Does anybody have any ideas on how the SC get driven?  Is it from the AC compressor????  I don't have AC on my 22R but I have an AC bracket and compressor that I was going to install to run OBA.  Also, it looks like the belt is ribbed.  How does the LC engneering SC get driven?

thanks

Well, the pulley they included (your last picture) looks like half of a clutch pulley. Where's the rest of it?

Everything I got was in the box in the first picture.  Looks like I'm missing more than I though.  :therethere:

Yup, unless its below the SC and out of the picture, you should have a 2nd piece to that larger pulley resting at the bottom of the box on the lower left side of your first pic, that has two wires and a plug coming out from it, with a huge magnet (solenoid) that should be pretty heavy.

But you can still make this work with an "always on" pulley, but those pulleys use like a timing belt style grooved belt, so what ever you find it'll have to match the other pulley at least

Would it be bad to have an always on supercharger?  I figured that's how most of them worked?  I think this SC runs off of the AC compressor, I find that kinda strange.  How bad would it be if I took and ran a V-belt from the crank pulley and somehow figured out a way to add a pulley to the supercharger?  If I ran it this way, I'm guessing I would need some kind of belt tensioner as well?  I've searched the Internet and some of other BBS's for this specific supercharger with no luck.

Anybody have a K&F supercharger or pictures of one installed?

Here's the company I think took over KF
http://www.f*geolsuperchargers.com/  (EDIT - THE LETTERS f*g MUST BE BLOCKDED.  IT SHOULD BE AN "A" IN THERE)
The site doens't help much but I did download the PDF marked "S-10 kit info".  It shows some diagrams of the SC and a parts list and stuff.  Looks just like my SC and even on one of the diagrams, it has a "KF" in the same spot as mine.

It appears this SC does run off of the AC compressor.  I happened to pick an AC compressor and AC bracket up a couple of months ago to run OBA.  #1, it doesn't appear that the bracket will even mount on my 22R.  I think the AC stuff is from a new 22RE.  Does that make a difference?

#2, I took the AC compressor apart to see if the SC pulley would fit on it.  Looks like it's too big.  Here's two pictures of different pulleys.

Any suggestions?  Are the 84-85 AC compressors different than the newer ones?

Thanks guys!  :beerchug:

Update:

Toyjoeta came over yesterday with his 85 PU 22RE and we compared his AC compressor to mine.  Looks like my compressor is smaller and not the correct one.  Does anybody have an 84-85 AC compressor laying around that can take a quick measurement for me?  I just need the one 10mm bolt taken out of the top and measurement of the bearing diameter.  I hope my problem is just having the wrong sized AC compressor and I just need to find a 84-85 22R or 22RE compressor.
