R150 Shift Problem
« on: Jun 20, 2005, 04:09:55 AM »
Got a friend with an '87 turbo supra that won't shift into 1st or 2nd (R150 5-speed tranny).  What could possibly cause this, i.e., how hard would it be to fix, and if it needed a rebuild, can it be rebuilt with the normal gearing instead of the lower 1st gear?  I myself have an '82 Hilux 4WD, and I'e had good luck with Marlin in the past, and he seems to be the only one that does these rebuilds.

Thanks in advance for any help.

You get very few tranny questions answered here.  My daughters 86 R151 had the same problem and it turned out to be the shifter fork was broke, rebuilding now.

It is very common for the 1-2 fork to break due to the larger shift hub, and mainshaft retainer plate wear.
Unless the cause of the mainshaft movement and loose 5th gear is corrected, the fork will break again.

I recall the R154 having a 3.24 first gear:crossed: . This is the highest 1th gear made.
Other lower 1th gears are; 3.83 [R150, R150F, R151], 4.31 [R151F], and 5.15 [R452].

I am writing from home and do not have my R notes in front of me.

I sell a heavy duty retainer plate, and yes, I rebuilt the R154 trans.

Old thread, I know.  But I'm also having trouble shifting to and from 1st and 2nd.

How do I check the 1-2 fork?  Can it be seen through the top of the trans via the shifter plate?

Whats the fix?

Any pictures of the fork?

no you have to take the tranny apart to see the forks on a r150/r151. i had problems with my 4runner because a fork retainer bolt was loose. but I'd pull your shifter off first and check the condition of the shifter seat first. they go bad quick.
