dana 44 from 87 grand wagoneer
« on: Jan 27, 2003, 04:03:53 PM »
Is it possible, to put a d44 from an 87 wag. drivers side pumpkin, into a 85 yota.  Also is it worth doing and whats involved.
Does the fact that I have 1.5"wheel spacers make it easier to break birfields???

    Help?????

is it worth doing

Now the discussion is CTMs or Longfields. I would have to go with the Longfields, plus Toyota axles provide more ground clearance and more clearance around the hubs on the outside.

No. It adds load to your knuckle and housing only, not to any inner parts.

If you would like to learn a few tips of how to avoid breaking your birf's, then I invite you to read a small write up on our webpage - click through to Why Birfields Fail.

Just try to avoid powering while your steering wheel is pegged all of the way to any side. The article covers what happens when you do this and why its not a good idea

The first two I broke for that reason-dumping the clutch with the wheel cranked.  Then a friend told me thats how they break, so i mcorrected my driving habit and really tried not doing that.  Ive broken 3 more since two were in places that i was staring down at the wheel and it was nowhere neer cranked.  Oh and the other one was backing uphill while turning to get a cool photo, that one was just me not paying any attention.   4 were stockers and one was an allpro.  I think Ill try the longfields, if those doont work, it looks like I'm gonna have to pop for a custom d60
I just built my truck 3 months ago so 5 birfields in 3 months is adding up fast but i gotta learn somehow!!!  Thanks again for your help.

You could put in the D44 but would have to change you t-case to a drivers side output :o

The 2 birfs I have broken were both backing up with the wheels turned in the snow. Got traction and pop :smack:

FWIW I have been wheeling for 17 years with very little dentage, and I always have fun

Would this only be from a Wagoneer? Dana 44s were offered with both side offsets, Drivers or Passengers, so tbnbears can swap in a passengers side D44 with no problems  :brush:

When you think about Backing up, the wheel that is on the outside of the corner is actually being forced to piviot beyond what your steering input is telling it to. The better the traction, the more the tire will want to turn more with the corner thus creating this bad angle on the outters.

check your steering stops..My buddy had this problem when he got his toyota..someone had cut the stops out so it would turn sharper.well it did and he broke alot of b/f's before the problem was caught..somtimes they bend in also..
