80 Pictures
« on: May 25, 2005, 07:22:38 PM »
Well I can't believe its been a year already, I bought my 80 a year ago and still haven't done crap to it. Mind you I have a bunch of upgrades sitting in my garage but just don't have the time to put them on. So I guess I'll just keep beating the crap out of it the way it is. I did put some old tires on to see how much I need to lift it to fit 35's. Here are a few pictures of the places I've taken my almost stock 80, I'll post them in order of my growing stupidity of wheeling it further than I should. Even with that I have only had two problems I bent my tierod being a big dummy and had a valve adustment set screw back out and strip. Not too bad with where it's already been and how much its been built.

The first set of Pictures are from Big Bear on the John Bull and Holcomb Valley trails. This was just after I bought it and it was on 31's.

The next set was taken out at Stoddard Valley on Ackey-Breaky and Empire Strikes Back, still on 31's. Pushing it a little harder on these but still she did me right and forged through the rocks.

These are from the Johnson Valley area, no not the hammers. I may be crazy but I'm not stupid, this was in the rockcrawling compitition area. I now have 33's on my truck, and fixed my bad valve. This is also where I bent my stock tierod, I did get a much beefer one from a club member but I have yet to install it. I just straightened it and welded a piece of L-channel to keep it from bending.

just proof that toyotas are some of the best stock 4x4 rigs out there.

Can you say MOAB!!! Still the only mod I've made is putting on some old 33's and they are about 75% done. On top of that I drove my truck there and back. I didn't do the real tuff  stuff but did push the limits of my trucks capabilities. We did Poison Spider Mesa, Moab Rim, Cliff Hanger, Steel Bender, Kane Creek Canyon and Elephant Hill. This will take a few posts.

I wouldn't call it properly, but it definatly got used. That paint is used up too, it has no shine left took my clubs president almost 25 years to get it to fade enough for me to call it desert camo.

I'm real easy on clutches in the first place and believe me once I drop it, I don't stop until I'm on top or the truck will go no further. I got a nick-name in Moab: Momentum Man. That's not to say that I was charging up everything destroying my truck either, I'm also real good with the skinny pedal and keeping it just above a stall.

Oh, not only can I imagine it I have driven a few so low geared rigs that you start wondering what that third pedal is for anyways. Plus my 4Runner was an auto.

Thanks, I try hard to get some good ones. My 11 yr. old takes them. He drives too but I can't take any of him driving yet since I still feel the need to be in the vehicle with him.

We went to Big Bear last weekend, didn't do the Forest Fest (didn't even know) but we did most of Holcomb Creek until one of my club members broke his Ford Bronco (figures). Here's a few pics:

The person I bought the truck from put them in they look 80's, he was kinda short so he had booster blocks installed and the holes were close so he just offset the holes to line up . I removed them and just had to bend the front tabs a little to line-up with the factory holes and I turned his booster flat and redrilled the holes to match. I'd post you a picture but I'm at work and my trucks at home. If I think about it I'll take a couple shots and post them tommorrow.

Thanks I like it too. It will slowly and painfully transform into a true off-road machine. In almost every set of pictures I've done something to it but when you are on a budget and just bought yourself a motorhome you put some of the more important stuff off. One of these days I'll at least get a single tcase from marlin but for now I just bash it up. I bent my t-case crossmember last weekend, pushed the trans into the tunnel so I'm in the market for a replacement.
