Martack for stock diff?
« on: Jun 15, 2003, 09:12:36 AM »
Just got some Longfields and have a stock open v6 diff in my "85 front axle. I am not going to have a Detroit in my front axle for another month or two. When I insert the inner axle shafts all the way into the carrier(stock v6 diff) the oil seals are in the right spot. So do I even need to Martack? Also, when I do get the Detroit will it increase carrier depth and cause the need for a Martack?

I have heard that if the shaft won't move in or out enough to go off of the seal surface, you don't need a tack or a clip. On some lockers and LS's, they don't have the cross pins inside like the stock ones do. The Martack is used on these diffs, because otherwise the shaft could slide in past the seal surface. I also have heard that the detroit has the cross shafts so you shouldn't need them in there either. My thoughts are if you can keep from tacking them, it makes it easier when you break something to just slip off the birf rather than have to grind it off.

You know the reason we stopped doing this is because people were not following our directions, and were placing the martac to far in, and one guy had an ARB and when he bolted down the spindle, it was tight but he kept going and I believe he broke part of the carrier or some internal piece on the ARB and demanded Marlin to replace his ARB. When we inspected his axle, the martac was like an inch to far in, you know something way the heck off and it was so obvious he didnt know what he was doing....

But after this Marlin pretty much stopped recommending this because to many people were not following his exact directions and making mistakes.

But it works great when done correctly ;)
